Water Safety

Sophia has no desire to be in any kind of raft and does not want to be held either in the pool. The kid wants to go and for some reason thinks she has mastered swimming. So what is safe for her at her age (almost 16 months). Life vest seem so uncomfortable, so are arm floaties ok? I have seen the one piece swimsuit thingy, are these ok?

Re: Water Safety

  • The arm floaties are actually kind of dangerous. I'm not sure about the swimsuit...

  • Good question! I have the same problem. I really wish I had the time to put G in ISR but I don't. I was looking at the one piece swimsuit thingy but I couldn't find one small enough.

  • Emma is the same way. I tried the arm floaties and they didn't really help at all. She hated having the life vest on. I bought one of those one piece swimsuit float things but ended up taking it back because I figured she'd hate having that on as well.

Basically, when we are in the pool I have to hold her all the while she's struggling to get loose. She likes to launch off the steps in the pool whether you are ready or not to catch her. Scares me!

  • T has a life jacket and she's not a fan. I bought a cheapy swimsuit one. It's ok even though it's her size it seems too big. It doesn't hold her upright, which I want. Maybe a nicer one would work better? Sorry I am in the same boat and not much help.

  • man I wish there was a better option for her age! I figured the floaties were a no go and the one piece swimsuits do look huge for her "weight range" when I was looking the other day. Pool time is just no fun when she thinks she can jump off the next to last step and be able to stand. The child is fearless!

  • FIL got DD a cute life jacket from Bass Pro. It has the piece behind the head to keep her upright. We haven't used it but it seems pretty safe... now as to whether or not DD will wear it....... that remains to be seen.

  • I think the only thing that is going to keep their head above water is a uscg approved life vest/jacket.  Infant ones all have the "flap" on the backside.  This is what will keep their head up.  Infant ones typically go up to 30 pounds.  We bought DD one last year that I think adjusts a little better to such a wide weight range and it doesn't seem to bother her.  There isn't a back to it, just the head "flap".  You can see pictures in my blog... this post has pictures showing the front and the back..

I haven't seen it in stores (havne't looked at Bass or Cabela's though).  My DH got it from one of his suppliers. But Overtons has ones that are similar...

  • Gage is the same way, we spend our summers in the water. We are always at the lake, pool, or beach. We make him wear a life vest. The first couple of times last summer were a fight but now he knows. I would just say persevere and make her wear it. I got Gage's at Bass Pro and Ella Claires at Overtons.
