Maternity Clothes Sizing

Hi ladies.  How do maternity sizes run?  If you were a small pre-pregnancy, are you a small for maternity clothes?  As your belly gets bigger, do you buy larger maternity sizes or do maternity clothes grow with you?  Sorry for the dumb questions!  I'm getting close to needing a few work skirts/pants and plan to check out Gap and Old Navy online today.  Thanks!

Re: Maternity Clothes Sizing

  • I typically wear a medium, but I've found that I am swimming in medium maternity tops right now (I'm showing, but don't have a huge bump yet). As for right now, I've been buying small tops, and plan on getting bigger sizes as my belly grows more.

  • This is what I've done so far....

I wear a 4 at Gap.  I wear the same size in maternity from there.  My thighs are getting a little bigger, so I may bump up.  Anywhere else, I'm still a small or medium.  One thing I noticed is that a lot of maternity isn't long enough for my body.

  • it is your normal size. So, i am a size 8, so i would buy a size 8 in maternity (that would be a Medium). I believe you stay in the same size bracket throughout your pregnancy.

  • It really depends on the store.  IMO Old Navy and Gap both run big.  Most places do assume you are going to add a few inches everywhere, so assuming you gain weight in boobs, belly, and hips, you might stay the same size.  If you gain it only in the belly though, you might have to go down a size.  I've always worn an XXS or XS in non-maternity stuff at Old Navy and their XS maternity shirts are so huge that they fall off of me- and I'm not just talking about the belly region.
  • They grow with you.  I'm a medium pre-pg and buy medium sizes in anything for the bottom half (skirts, pants, shorts).  I do have a long torso though and sometimes I find the tops cut too short (nothing worse than an exposed belly panel!).  If the top is super long I can wear a medium but if it's cut on the shorter side (and especially so if it's 100% cotton and on the shorter side) I'll go with a large.  My advice is to try things on as much as you can.

    This is not necessarily true.

You are supposed to buy your regular size in maternity clothes. Of course, as with all clothing shopping, sizes will vary a little from store to store. Maternity clothes should accomodate your growing belly, although it is possible that some styles that work now might not work as well later and vice versa.
  • i find it that pants run a lot larger than normal.. and shirts a lot smaller (due to my boob size).

  • The only size that I have gone up is in my designer pregnancy jeans...I was a 26, but that size doesn't fit over my large butt anymore, so I have gone up to a 27 and even 28 in one pair:-(  But smalls at most major maternity places still work well.
  • I would like to help but I wore almost all junior sizes before?like?Jr med and large and in maternity I wear mostly smalls and sometime those are a little beggy. Jean wise I wear about 1 to 2 sizes smaller. For the most part a lot of?the?clothes grow with you some shirts you might out grow so try to get them a little loose so you have some growth room. I love the Gap the maternity pants and jeans are my favorite so far.
  • A fitter at Motherhood Maternity told me size 2-4 is mat. small.. 6-8 is mat. medium.. 10-12 is mat. large.. so on. If you start to grow out of that size you could go up as needed I'm sure. The shirts I got based on the sizing chart give me plenty of room without being too big.. Hope this helps and have fun shopping.. :)

    I agree with this!

  • I ordered some dresses at Old Navy that were Mediums, they are huge still, I should have bought a small. Pre-pregnancy I was a size 6.

As for Motherhood, I went on Saturday and got lots of stuff. Luckily, I tried all of it on because for the first time in my life I wore a size large in tops. A medium fit, but I am sure that I would need a large in the next month. Pre-preg I was a small to medium in shirts. I don't think Motherhood takes major boob growth into consideration. I am currently a DD, and I have no idea how much bigger breasted women wear their shirts. I bought 2 skirts that I LOVE DEARLY in a medium. The capris I got are mediums and currently too big.

That is just my experience. GL
