pitted edema?

Do I need to call my midwife about pitted edema? Today is the first time I've noticed it, I've never had any other symptoms of high bp. Today's also the hottest day we've had so far this summer. I'm thinking I'll definitely call in the morning if it hasn't gone away overnight, but should I call the on-call midwife now or am I OK to wait until morning?

Re: pitted edema?

  • I don't know how serious the swelling is if you have indentations....a nurse friend told me to call in right away if I ever have "dents" in my swelling.  It wouldn't hurt to put a call in tonight!

my ob says that if i get any swelling that doesnt go down by putting my legs above my heart, then to call

but i have pitted edema- not a severe case of it- but i think what they called a +1... and days like this usually does it for me!

so just put ur feet up and drink tons of water - if it doesnt go down w/in a few hours , i would call the on call doc to be safe!

  • I wouldn't worry too much unless it was sudden swelling of your hands, feet or face.  I'm a nurse and I noticed yesterday that I had +1 pitting edema in one of my ankles.  I've just kept my feet up and drank tons of water.

  • I've had pitting edema since around 20 weeks that has only gotten worse.  It's perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned about unless you also have high blood pressure or a lot of swelling in your hands and face.

I've had it for months and it's normal, as long as your blood pressure is normal and you have no protein in your urine. Unfortunately, it's one of the joys of a summer pregnancy and totally normal!
  • my blood pressure does flirt with being high, so i called. since i was just in a week ago and my bp and urine checked out ok, i got the all clear...glad i called, though! :)
  • I've been having that for about a month. I went to the doctor but my blood pressure is fine and there's no protein in my urine. Pitted edema is a sign of preeclampsia but only if you also have high blood pressure and protein. The doc just told me that it was the heat and my growing uterus. So now I just try to keep my legs elevated as much as I can and not sit too long. GL, it won't hurt to check in with your doctor, just in case.
