If we have a girl the first name on my list is Alyssa-Nichole. The problem with this is I don't want her name to be said like Alyssa Milano. It should be said like A-lisa. Would it be better if I spelled it Elyssa. I feel at least this way people will call her E-lisa. Should I spell it with and A or an E?
Re: Alyssa vs Elyssa
I would pronounce Alyssa and Elyssa the same - "eh-LIS-uh." I think the double "s" is the reason.
The people I know that pronounce their names "ah-LEES-uh" spell it Elisa, Alisa, or Elysa.
elyssa is horrible, don't do that. i don't understand how you want to pronounce it, you like ay-lissa or uh-leesa? if you want it to be aleesa, then you should spell it elisa [although it could still be mispronounced] and if you like aylissa then i don't think there's anything you can do.
also, if nichole is going to be her mn, there's no need to hyphenate it. that can get really confusing when filling out forms, getting married, changing name, etc.
I don't think this would work, I know a Alisa that's Ah-Leesa.
Personally I'd stick with Alyssa.
I'm confused--doesn't she want it to be pronounced uh-leesa?? If so, I think Alisa or Elisa is the only way to go. Alyssa or anything with 'yssa' will always be pronounced "issa" like 'melissa' imo.
The original poster said she doesn't want the name to be pronounced like Alyssa Milano. She wants it to be "Ah-leesa." That's why we're all suggesting Alisa, Elisa, or Elysa.
I like Elyssa

I have a student whose name is?pronounced?the way you want. ?She spells it "Alisa." ?
I would pronounce Alyssa like Alyssa Milano. ?FWIW, my little sis is Allyssa, so I might be more likely to pronounce it like hers out of habit.

ditto.
I think you're going to have to correct the pronunciation for a lot of people no matter how you spell it. It's unclear to me if you want it to be a long A-leesa or a short A-leesa. Either way I'd do one "s" to at least get the "lisa" sound rather than the "lissa" sound.
Also agree about Nicole/"hole". Since you're going to have issues with the first name pronuciation to begin with, I'd at least give her a "normally" spelled middle name. Especially if you actually want a double first name.
My cousin is named Elyssa. Her parents needed a name with "E" so they just made it up (she's 30 and they weren't trying to be unique- they HAD to have an "E" name).
With all that said, she has spent the last 30 years correcting people on the spelling and always complains about her name. When she was little, I remember her always being upset that they didn't have pens and other gagets with her name on it. Invitations were always spelled incorrectly. I'm sure she would go on and on about it.
When you have a name where almost everyone spells it with an "A", you're going to give her a headache for the rest of her life by spelling it differently. Alyssa isn't a name like Catherine where some spell it with a C and some spell it with a K. Everyone spells Elyssa with an "A" so they will automatically assume it is spelled that way.
Just my 2 cents.
