1. As an editor, I can?t tell you how annoying it is to take those spaces out when editing. It looks so awkward in layout. Grrrr. Now, if only my writers could remember this when I tell them.

I was taught 2, but ever since I learned that the "right" way is 1, I have been using 1. And if I accidentally use 2, I remove a space. I have a yearning to be a proofreader.
2 spaces. Always will, always have. I took 3 years of typing and another semester at business university. I don't think there is enough division between sentences using only 1 space.
BTW...I also spell envelope with an "e" at the end! I'm REALLY old school! lol
I'm getting from the editors/proofreaders who posted that 1 space is now common in textbooks and newspapers. I presume it has to do with getting more words on each page. What about in the legal and business worlds? Are 2 spaces still the predominant way to separate sentences? I'm wondering if it is dependent on the industry, where there isn't such a premium on page space. Or does it just separate the old folks from the young folks?
Re: Do you use one space or two after periods?

I thought 2 was only if you are typing with a typewriter???
One!!!
This is a big peeve of mine. AP, Chicago and MLA all say one space now....follow the rules people

I can't!!!! It is just such a habit. I even do it when I am posting on the nest

2. That's what we learned in typing class back in high school.
I only use 1 on text messages though. If I hit the space key twice it adds a period and 1 space.

Wow, I thought I was the only one using two spaces. I'll have to try and use just one now that the style has changed.
Why is that, anyway? Is it what pp suggested and it was something to do with typewriters?
me neither!
