We have him on the passenger side. I chose that side b/c it's easier for me to reach him when I'm driving. Don't worry, I only reach for him if we are at a stoplight!

ours won't go in the middle either, so i'm planning on putting it on the passenger side that way if DH has to drive my car there is enough room for him to move the seat back, plus this way when i'm driving i can peak over and see in the car seat easier as well.

I just got back from a carseat safety class at DH's work and the fire guy who is an expert in this said the middle is ideal, passenger back is next and drivers' side is least. The reason he stated is in a head on collision it's most likely to be on the driver side... and driver's/passenger side are pretty equal risk for other types of accidents.
We have ours on the passenger side. Her infant carseat required the seat in front of it to be all the way forward, and that wouldn't work behind the driver seat b/c it would make my DH WAY too close to the wheel (and he drives my car a lot).

Re: carseat question
DS is behind the passenger. It's easier for the driver to see him in the mirror, plus I can reach over to hand him a paci or toy.
