Baby Names

The name Frank

I never got to meet DH's mother and father because they passed away before we ever met. We are having a boy and DH would like to name the child Frank but I just don't like it. He wanted to know why and I told him that it sounds like a a grumpy old man's name ... it took me a while to say it and I tried to be polite but he would not consider other names until  told him.

Was I really rude? Is is it me? No offense to anyone who is thinking of that name, names are a personal choice ... like the name "Apple".

Re: The name Frank

  • I'm with you...Frank is definitely NMS at all!  Sounds to me like what you said, a grumpy old man just MHO.

I think it is sort of cute. ?It is on the list of "hipster baby names" on nameberry.com, so it can have sort of a cool, modern vibe if you are into that.

I would definitely consider it for a middle name, at least. ?It sounds like it would mean a lot to your DH, and I think that is important with naming your child?

  • I like it. I think all that is old is new again. Plus it would mean a great deal to your hubby.  I have a student named Franco but he goes by Frank and he is very hip!

  • We are not modern and hip people.. I suggested it as a middle name. It is a derived from the name Francis.
  • My friend named her boy Franklin, family name. We call him Frankie. Cute but not for me!

Sorry didn't get that (middle name option from your post).  Francis would work well as a middle name it is not as harsh sounding as Frank.  I still think that it would be a nice thing to do for your dh. Unless you are doing a double name thing the mn doesn't get used much except for formal documents and when mothers yell full names to indicate to their  children that they are not please with them!

  • I like it--all the Franks I know have been really nice men.  I think it sounds like using it as mn would mean a lot to your DH.

Could it be his middle name? I dislike the name Raymond a lot but I want to honor my grandfather because he was very special to me...it will be the middle name.

  • I know you're in a sticky situation... my DH and I were in a similar situation and I wasn't crazy about the name he was suggesting.  But you guys can work with some variations of the name; I love Frankie!

  • To Timmy:

First you said you liked the name Frank then you said in later poste when I mentioned Francis that Frank was harsh. Your statements are conficting. I really do not need opinions on it because selecting names is a personal choice, everyone has their take on it. I do not like it as a first name, would use it as a middle name or Francis as a middle name. Our last name is Verdi so I was thinking of Robert as a first name. I'm not that into unique sounding names.

  • I dont' like it.

Then why ask opinions on a name opinion board?

I do like Frank. I think Frank as a mn sounds harsh, where Francis after a fn flows better.  I don't really care what you name your child although Robert is a great, classic and strong name. GL

  • Don't like it.  What does it have to do with his parents?
  • I like Frank, or better yet Frankie while they're young, but keep in mind that you'll probably only be using his middle name to yell at him, so you don't want bad feelings about the name, or you're be angier for no reason. If its really that important to DH try to think of the name as something that will make him happier, and thus you happier. We decided that since DH's and his Dad's middle names are both Scott, and its really important to his Dad that we keep Scott, we're going to call him Scottie Blue, but call him Blue. I love my middle name, Elizabeth, even though DH doesn't, so if we have a girl it will be Scottie Bleu Elizabeth. Fit the name in somewhere, but also pick a name you really do like. If you love some name that your DH doesn't, tell him you'll to do a swap, make Frank the first name, and the name you like the middle, but call him what you want to. Or even call him a nickname that has nothing to do with his real name! Its your baby, call it want you want.
  • I don't like it. It sounds very old school like Clark or Bill.?
  • Timmy: I asked if I was being rude to my DH.
  • read the other responses...clearly everyone else had an opinion on your name too,  so why pick on me?

    to answer your question: yes!

  • nms...maybe you could use it for a middle name?

  • What about Francis and calling him "Frankie"
  • It's nms. I have an uncle with that name so I definitely do not associate it with grumpy old men, but it seems like such a grown up name for a baby.
