cheese question

I asked the Saladworks manager if the feta cheese is pasteurized and he checked and said, "it's all natural and stored in pasteurized skim milk."  Any idea what that means?

Re: cheese question

  • That means no.

  • It means that you didn't get a complete answer to your question.  If they check the ingredients, the first item should be pasturized milk.

  • It probably means that the liquid the cheese is stored in is pasteurized milk. I would not take this as the cheese itself is made out of pasturized milk. Personally, I would not trust it, but it is your decision.
  • Unpasteurized cheese is severely restricted in the US.  Assuming that you are in the US, I would say that the cheese is probably pasteurized.  It isn't likely that the company would go through the hassle of having the more expensive and difficult to get raw milk version.

  • Exactly - he did not seem to give you a straight answer... so he went around it in hopes that you heard what you were looking for.

Since he is saying that it is "all natural" I would assume that it is not pasteurized and only the milk that it is stored in is pasteurized.

  • Unpasteurized cheese is very expensive.  You typically only see it in fine restaurants and gourmet food stores/cheese shops.  I'd be shocked if Saladworks is spending that kind of money on feta.
