Baby Names

Difficult time choosing...

Alright ladies, I am having a VERY difficult time picking a boys name.  What do you think of my current top 3?   (I know Mraz is pretty "out there" for a middle name but we wanted the middle name to be something meaningful and risking TMI he was concieved after a Jason Mraz concert Embarrassed )

Sebastian Mraz

Wyatt Mraz

Jacoby (Jack) Mraz

Re: Difficult time choosing...

  • I nanny for a little boy named Wyatt. I think it's a cute name. I understand wanting to use something meaningful, but your son will be grossed out when he finds out why his middle name is Mraz. I would seriously consider using something else.

  • My bother's name is Jason and he wants to use that himself someday so that is out.
  • It's a middle name... I dont' see what the big deal is.  I would think your brother would like to have the kid named after him.  I don't think people can call dibs on a name.

  • I agree; your baby will NOT want to know that.

While I don't hate the idea, would you want to be named Jessica Aerosmith Jones?   Anne Garfunkle Williams?   Lisa ABBA Smith?   Probably not.

  • Sorry ladies, I should have specified that the middle name is pretty set in stone at this point.  I didn't expect many of you (if any of you) to like - what I would like to know is what you think of the first names.  I have found that boy names have been very difficult.

Also, this being my second child I have found myself being preoccupied with his name "going with" my daughter's name - Stella.  Do you ladies find yourself trying to match the style of names also?

  • Are you really going to tell people in real life (including your son) that you conceived after a Jason Mraz concert?
  • If someone were to ask about the middle name I would have no problem being honest.  It shouldn't come as too big of a shock that I became pregnant by having sex.

No, it's not a shock that you became pregnant by having sex.  It would just make for an awkward conversation, in my opinion (and no, I am not a prude or anything)  I just picture the person you're talking to saying, "Oh...isn't that....interesting....", or your son saying, "Mom, gross!!" when he is 10 or so.  Just my opinion.

Oh, and I never gave my opinion on the first name, sorry.  I like Jack out of your choices.  Sebastian doesn't flow well with the middle name, and Wyatt is just not my style.

Right, but that's the last thing your son wants to think about. ?

  • My husband hates Wyatt so he would be happy to know someone agrees with him!  I love Jack and Sebastian is just something I came across today and it has grown on me quickly.  I do have a longer list of names I like but I find different names moving to the top almost weekly.  My husband is afraid we are never going to have a name picked out in time for the birth.  It was so much easier when we were choosing for my daughter.

I know you ladies will be happy to hear that while the middle name is almost official there were other possibilities - Duke (my gpa) or with Jack we also talked about Jack Wyatt.

On a side note - Scuzzle, your little lady is adorable.

Right, but that's the last thing your son wants to think about.

That's also totally going to embarrass him when his friends ask about his name--it's a pretty obvious connection.  I think it's a lot to saddle a kid with a constant reminder of his parents having sex just so the parents can rekindle that memory.  I know that's not what you asked or what you want to hear, but I just hope you've considered all angles.

Sebastian and Jacob both sound nice with Stella.

  • I love the name Duke for a mn.
  • I like the middle name!

My choice is Sebastian. I've always thought it was a cool name.

  • I love Jack but I'd pick Wyatt because I know a million Jack's.
  • I like all 3 actually, but I think that Jacoby (Jack) Wyatt is a really cute combo!! (since you mentioned it as a possibility)

I agree with others about Mraz as a middle name. It's just really inappropriate and trashy. That poor child will be mortified.

I love Sebastian!  The others are okay.  That being said, I agree with the above. The middle name thing is really really bad.  Not the name itself but the reasoning behind it.  I think you and your DH should try to put yourselves in the place of your child and think how you would have felt as children knowing you got your middle name because of the circumstances under which they had sex to conceive you.

I like them all! In this order- Jacoby, Sebastian, Wyatt.  I think Wyatt is beginning to run the risk of "you were born in 2009-10 and I can tell"... It isn't a classic name, but one that I am hearing more and more. If you need to narrow down, I'd take that one out.
  • Sebastian is my favorite!
  • With Stella, I like Sebastian best. I also just prefer that name. Jacoby is okay but Jack is overdone. Wyatt is cute but like Sawyer it seems trendy in a cowboy frontier sort of way.

As far as Mraz goes, he doesn't have to know that. He can just know he was named that because his parents like Jason Mraz, and I would personally think that beats the heck out of most reasons for middle names.

I say this as someone who would have liked to name her kid after the Beatles, had DH gone for the idea. :)

  • Just to clarify: you had sex at the concert?  Like in the bathroom or something?

  • I like Sebastian the best. And maybe since you're sold on the middle name, you could just say it's bc you both love Jason Mraz's music rather than the whole concert deal. I agree that no kid wants to hear that. Ditto for other family and friends.

  • My pick is for Wyatt
  • Sebastian

And I agree with the others - if you insists on Mraz for the middle name then just say because you like his music, don't tell the poor kid about the sex

  • They're all great first names; I think I like "Jack" the best.  But I'm not crazy about the middle name, not only because it may embarrass your son but because it's just a funny sounding name.  Does Jason Mraz have a song that you could use as influence for a middle name?

  • Wyatt or Jacoby but I dislike Jack as a nn for Jacoby.

Sorry, I don't like any of these. Wyatt is the one I like the most though

  • OMG, Do not use the name Mraz.  It's kinda stalkerish and doesn't seem to have meaning other than the coincidence that he was conceived after a concert.  Not to mention that it's a hard name to pronounce anyway (no one will remember Jason Mraz by the time your child is 10).

Family names have real meaning and Duke is just a kickass middle name anyway - Use that!  It sounds great with Sebastian, which I also love.

  • K, half of my family's last name is Mraz--and let me tell you from experience that it is hard to spell, pronounce, sound out, etc!  When you say "Mraz" to people, they always ask "what?"  It is a difficult name to have.  I never even had it, and always heard that all the women on that side of the family were so relieved to get new last names when they were married.

I agree that Duke is a really cool name, and has more meaning than when your child was conceived and less potential embarassment or awkwardness.  And I know this is really silly, but it just seems kinda odd to me to name your own kid after a celebrity you don't know...

Anyways, I really like your taste in all the other names!!  Good luck, and have fun!

  • I love Sebastian.

What about using Jason Mraz's middle name?  It's Thomas.
    Sebastian Thomas is adorable.
