DD not eating enough solids.

What did you do when DC refused to be spoonfed? I can't get her to eat anything off a spoon except plain unsweetened applesauce. I tried oatmeal and applesauce with a little milk this morning and she ate about 1/8 of a cup. That was 'breakfast'. I tried a change of scenery when she got fussy in the high chair and that only got me about two more spoonfuls into her mouth before she started crying/fussing again. She does okay with table foods/self feeding, but even then, she's only eating about 1 1/2 oz. at each mealtime. They say not to force feed, but seriously, how can I get her to eat more? Sheri was 15 lbs. 4 oz as of her checkup last week (5% weight, still 75% height) and the doctor isn't worried; she just keeos saying she's a tall skinny baby like her dad. She's always been on the higher end of height and lower end of weight, but DH is worried now that she's in single digit weight percentiles. Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Try spicing the food up a bit. Aubrey loves things that are spicy/flavorful & will eat much better when her food isn't bland. She LOVES Pepper Jack cheese in her grill cheese sandwiches. Good luck!

  • I hate to say it because I know how hard you work to EBF, but one bottle of formula a day was what got DD to chunk up.

But, if your pedi isn't concerned, try not to worry. FWIW, DD despised purees and does great with table food, so I would keep pushing that.

  • When K wouldn't let me feed him I had to just let him feed himself, that is the only way he would take anything for a while.    We also eat dinner when he eats.  He is big in copying what we do,  so that maybe something you want to try if she is feeding herself.
  • if it were me, i wouldn't be concerned if the doctor isn't - EBF babies are generally thinner than FF babies so that's probably a big part of it - also, i would try giving her more solid foods instead of purees - she should be able to eat steamed fruits and veggies at this point and then she can feed herself without making too big of a mess - variety may be part of it too - Sydney would get bored with eating the same things every day and i had to switch it up a lot to get her to eat - don't worry - she sounds like she's doing fine and you're doing a great job!
  • Thanks for the advice, ladies! Lunch went okay; I let her feed herself almost entirely; grilled cheese, banana and a littlr grilled c hicken. DH fed her dinner and tried self feeding, plus chicken and starrs (which she only ate part of). Jessi- We may add the bottle of formula, but I want to see how she does with self feeding for a few days.

Take that with a grain of salt. I would really only do it if your pedi was freaking out about her weight. That was why we did it.

  • I agree with the self feeding.  Ike will eat yogurt in the morning, but that's about all he will eat from a spoon (unless it's ice cream, lol).  He is pretty independent :o)  I also agree that as long as your Dr doesn't seem concerned, keep doing what you're doing :o)  However, easier said than done i know :o)
