We do CD, but baking soda works great in our diaper pail. And every once inawhile I take it outside and spray it with Lysol or use bleach wipes, then let it air out.
I bought this thing at Home Depot that absorbs smells and works great and it's "rechargeable". I can't remember the name of it. Let me look for a link...
ETA: OK, all I could find on Home Depot's website was for a pack of 30. I was able to buy them individually for like $6 at the store. Here is the link from the maker's site. I also wanted to add that it doesn't eliminate the smell but now the room and hallway don't smell. When we open the Diaper Champ up it of course makes this pregnant lady want to hurl but like I said the smell is at least contained now. Also, I am pretty bad about recharging it so that be could be why it isn't perfect. I actually ended up buying another one to use in our kitchen garbage container. That one seems to do really well.
Yes, our starts to stink once in awhile too...of course it's always bad when we open it to change the bag. About every 6 weeks (or when you catch a whif just walking by) DH sprays it out and rinses it with bleach, then we start over again.
Is there a totally stink-proof diaper pail out there? I love that the Champ fits any bag.
We clean ours with a clorox wipe with each bag change. If it's particularly stinky, we spray lysol in it too. We also try to take poopy diapers directly outside to the trash, rather than letting them sit in the Champ.
Re: Stinky Diaper Champ
Have you tried cleaning it with clorox cleanup? How about vinegar? Maybe clean it and set it outdoors to air out in the sun?
If you get it smelling ok again, toss a lump of charcoal in the bottom of it when you start using it again. It'll help absorb odors.
