your cervix was shortening and you needed a cerclage, bedrest, etc? ?One of my worries that I try not to think about too much is that something could be happening down there and I would not have any idea it was happening... my doc does not do internal exams at every appt yet although the ultrasound tech has done a transvag each time since 16 weeks, and I'm 22 weeks now.
Obviously your doctor checked and found the shortening or funneling or whatever was happening, but was it at a regular checkup or did you have a symptom like contractions, BH, or something else that led to the internal exam? ?Would the transvag u/s catch it if something was going on?
?
Re: How did you know/find out if
the transvag US is what checks cervix length - not internals. For me- the MFM did them starting at week 16 and stopped after week 28.
my OB says that he's not 100% sold on the idea of bed rest helping a short cervix - he has seen it go both ways with women who did bed rest end up still going early - vice versa, etc.
my OB does not do internals at all unless there is a reason to worry (PTL, bleeding, contrax)
I didn't have any symptoms at all. They caught the funnelling at my "big" u/s when they did a transvag to check my cervix (but no shortening yet). They had me come in a week later for a recheck and saw that it had shortened.
They tried to do a cerclage, but due to the positioning of everything, weren't able to. I'm on home bed rest now with progesterone suppositories and weekly cervical checks.
Well for me it was all at once. I was feeling great and my trans vag u/s showed a super cervix measurement (3.5). But during the weekend I started cramping and feeling small contractions. With multiples they had me go right on in and that is how they found out!
I've been through this twice (and doubt I ever want to be pregnant again) and each time my body has given me many keys to know something was way wrong! They are doing the u/s on you and that is so important. Much safer than being checked manually!!!! Just have faith. A lot of twin pregnancies turn out rough but many go just fine Hopefully you will be one of those being just fine!!!!!!!
I feel like a broken record whenever I go to the dr., but I ask these same Qs too every time! My dr. while I was living abroad wasn't a fan of the bedrest--he said that it was only prescribed as a last resort--BUT I just got a new dr. when I moved back to the US and he takes it as a case by case situation.
As for the cervix checks, I was/am worried since one of my little girls is still kinda low (close to my cervix). My London dr. avoided transvag u/s but my American dr. did one on me this past week at 22 weeks. I'm still long and closed (3.8) but they said they will measure every 2 weeks (I am assuming the same process next visit).
GL and hope you have a healthy road ahead, too!
