My review: Freshaire paint from Home Depot

We just painted our laundry room, and being pregnant I decided to use the Freshaire paint from Home Depot.  It is a totally no VOC paint, start to finish.  Some brands of no VOC paints use regular pigments, and these actually add VOCs to the paint.  Freshaire pigments come in little pre-mixed packets, so it is different from the other Home Depot paints.

You don't have unlimited color choices with this paint, but the color selection is good--modern and varied.  Since the pigment packets come straight from the factory, I'm told there is less variation between cans of paint.

We chose a blue semi-gloss, and I believe it was $39 for the gallon.  The room is about 6' x 8', and part of the time we had the door closed.  There is no paint smell, and it was very very tolerable to be in the closed up, tiny room.

The paint covered well with a roller on the first coat.  We will probably not do a full second coat and just do touch ups on the walls.  It will need a second coat in corners and around edges where we used a brush.  It does dry differently than regular paint, and will look splotchy for about 30 minutes.  That concerned me at first, but it turned out to be very even in color.  Overall, the paint covered as well as regular paints in the similar price range.

We will be painting our nursery in the next month or so, and I plan on using this paint again.

  • Which shade did you use?  We used Freshaire Evening Shadow and really like it.  We've used several different eco-friendly paints and Freshaire is a solid choice that's easy to get at Home Depot, as long as the color palette works for ya.  Glad you like it too!

  • We ended up with Endless Rain.  I took color chips of all the blues to Sears to look at with our new blue (twilight) washer and dryer.  I noticed that most of their blue colors had a slight purple tint to them, which I dislike.  Endless Rain is a true light blue color, no purple and no gray.

We have always used Benjamin Moore paints.  BM offers Natura, which is similar and has unlimited colors.  I just couldn't swing the expense of BM this time though.  I believe the price difference is about $25 per gallon where I live.

  • I work at Lowe's and deal with paint all day. The tint that is used in the NO Voc Olympic paint is so minimal that you wouldn't even notice that it is there. And there is unlimited colors that you can put into it.

I do believe that the VOC level is less than 1. It runs about $20 a gallon

  • We got the same for our nursery...the color was Aviary Nest or something like that.  I didn't notice a smell, which was great.  We did end up needing 2 coats though, and had to get another gallon.  The salesperson said it usually covers in one coat (with our room size), and we painted over a very light tan color, but nonetheless, we are happy with it.

We actually got the Kenmore Oasis top loaders during the 4th of July deal.  The setup of our laundry room makes a front loading washing machine very difficult to use, as the machines must sit in an L, corner to corner at a 90 degree angle.  We scheduled delivery for next weekend, and I'm anxious to use them!

we've used it for other rooms in our house and have loved it.  We will be using it in our nursery when the times comes.

We used it in our guest bathroom but decided to go back to regular latex paints.  I loved the fact that it had absolutely no smell but I hated the way it covered.  We had to use several coats to cover and then the paint didn't stick very well.  It actually peeled right off the wall in 2 areas and I had to go back sand it down and repaint.  I wish it would have worked better because the lack of smell was wonderful!
