OMG!!! we aren't alone..we went out to eat today and I swear people were looking at my LO like he was crazy...While I was feeding him all you hear is

DS grunted a lot too, in the hospital they told me he was shifting fluid in his lungs...but he continued when we got home, not sure how long he'd shift fluid...eventually it went away - but he could get awfully noisy - enough that I moved the bassinet into our bathroom so I could sleep too
DS has yet to cry when I am around (and I am around a lot)..I know he can, but the only time I have heard him was when he was first born. Other than that, the grunting and squealing is all I or the nurses get to signal a need or hunger. He is a grunting little guy!
I have no idea why either, but I think the little grunts they make are just about the cutest thing about a preemie. When we finally took our 2nd baby home and put him next to his brother, it sounds like we had a herd of billy goats in our bedroom. It was the sweetest, most heartwarming noise. I miss it.
i googled this and there doesn't seem to be a straight answer for this. i got everything from fluid in the lungs when they breath to an immature nervous system to not being heavy sleepers.
my son would also make a humming noise on his exhale when he was sleeping. that i miss!
p.s. it's super annoying when every time he grunts someone feels the need to point out that he's pooping. and then I say "no, he just grunts" and they say "but no, look, he's trying to poop, haha." and I repeat myself until I realize they are just are not listening..

Alcoholism is not determined by how much you drink or how often, but by negative consequences in your life that do not alter your drinking habits.
Until reading this post, I had no idea that the grunting was a preemie thing! ?I just thought our girls were billy goats as some random kind of thing. ?How funny. ??

I think I have the only non-grunting preemie.
Our NICU roommates were all grunters.. it was cute. Though one of them grunted with his reflux.. that was sad.
Robbie never did and still doesn't really grunt, though. Even when he poops. *LOL*
