Dairy-free/bfing mamas

Anyone care to share some yummy meal/snack ideas?  Also, what do you treat yourself with?  I am really  missing ice cream and cheese lately...I had a little cheese a couple of weeks ago and it made Jack feel awful-tons of gas and lots of spit-up.  He's so sensitive to my diet!  I feel like all I'm eating lately is rice and beans ;)

My little tip is that if you haven't tried rice milk yet, you should definitely check it out. I like it a million times better than soy milk.  It has hardly any taste at all, though it is very watery (that doesn't bother me at all, but it might bother some people).

  • Oreos are dairy-free.  Also there's a really good ice cream made of coconut milk, Purely Decadent.
    .
  • If Jack can tolerate you eating chocolate, there's great dairy-free ice-cream sandwiches made by Tofutti (found them at Whole Foods).  So Delicious makes yummy frozen fruit bars, too.  Also found something called "Smooze!" frozen fruit ice in coconut+passion fruit (other flavors, too) - again at Whole Foods.

Avocado makes a great cheese substitute on sandwiches, etc. b/c it's creamy.  Rice milk is great, isn't it :)

Whole Foods is a great place to browse for dairy-free options :)

  • I really like almond milk much more than soy.  When I was bf I would make milkshakes using dairy free sorbert, almond milk & fruit or chocolate sauce.

I'm so jealous of everyone that has a Whole Foods....very sadly, we do not :(

  • Ditto this - LOVE chocolate almond milk!
  • Sorry you don't have a Whole Foods near you :(  Any other "health food" type store?  They definitely make it easier to find substitute foods - sigh...

I also just came across this posting from another message board with an awesome list of dairy-free and soy-free foods, and it also has a great (long!) list of all the additives which are "hidden" dairy or soy-based :)

  • My snacks...(I love snacks and there is a reason I still have 8 lbs to loose) -oreos -BBQ fritos - chips and salsa - haggan daz chocolate sorbet -apples and peanutbutter Carmel dip -"natural popcorn"- suprisingly most of these are good -chex with peanutbutter and ghiredelli semisweet chips (milkfat does not have dairy) and covered in powdered sugar. Need fleishmanns unsalted butter for this too...pm me if you want the recipe. -French fries :(. My downfall. I make pizza using dough from pilsbury, dairy free sauce, and then lots of veggies to cover up the missing cheese these were the things I did when I was bf, and still do for ds

  • Do you have a Trader Joes near you? They have soy "icecream" sandwiches (chocolate on chocolate) that are really good and only 90 calories! Also their Kettle Corn is freakin awesome! I could seriously eat a whole bag. Another trick is to slice up a banana and drizzle chocolate syrup over it. Sort of a banana split minus the ice cream and extra calories! Thanks for the tip on the rice milk...I'll give it a try. Good luck!
  • I agree with DandelionM. Purely Decadent made with coconut milk ice cream is very delicious! This company also makes coconut milk ice cream sandwiches, coconut milk beverages (yummier than rice or soy milk), coconut milk yogurt, and coconut milk kefir (very soothing for the tummy) under the brand name So Delicious. As for cheese, I really like Daiya non-dairy cheese and Vegan Gourmet cream cheese and sour cream alternatives. And Soyatoo whipped topping tastes just like real whipped cream!
