I've read it can be used for either, but which gender do you think of when you hear it? I'm thinking of it for a boy name, but I just saw a girl on TV with that name...
The first thing I associate it with is Phoenix River, who was very much a boy. I have never met a girl named Phoenix, so until I do it will always be a (very bad) boys name in my mind.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

His name is River Phoenix.
And since I've never seen or heard of this as a first name I guess I would go w/ either boy or girl.
Sorry, I don't think of either. To me, a phoenix will always be a mythical bird. The same one the Atari game "phoenix" and the city in Arizona were named after. I don't think it sounds right for a name. I guess boy if I had to pick one.
