Preemies

How many...

ounces does your baby eat when you give him/her a bottle. I am exclusively breastfeeding so I am not sure, but we are going to start introducing the bottle here and there and i have no idea how much to offer...3 or 4 ounces? I am asking my pedi as well but wanted to see what you all give. Thanks!

Re: How many...

  • It depends on your child.

Take their weight divided by 2.2 to get kg. Then multiply that by 100. That's how many calories she should get per day. Divide that by how many times/day she eats. BM has 20calories/oz, so you can figure it from there.

    So if she weight 10lb 8 oz- 10.5/2.2= 4.77.

so that's 477 calories/day. which is about 24 oz/day. If she's eating 4x/day, that's 6oz per bottle. Of course, kids will eat different amounts at different times, so you may have to adjust a bit, but that's a start.

  • that's a very helpful formula! (i tested our numbers and he's right on track!)

i was just going to say that DS ate about 4oz at a time at that age. he's now up to 5oz (but between 6-7 times a day still). we tried to increase it to 6oz, but the reflux wouldn't allow it. :(

  • our son doesn't get the 100 calories per kilo per day, but is still growing, so the doctor said that's OK.. 100 is a good goal though!
  • It should be 100cal +/-20/day.

My son actually need more like 110-120/calorie/kilo to gain well. It's not uncommon for preemies to burn more calories than a full term baby (they typically work harder to breathe even if they're not on oxygen.)

And some babies just have a slower metabolism and require less. And it can change. For a while, Robbie was eating less and still gaining... then he had more trouble and stopped eating and growing..

It's really a bit of trial and error, as frustrating as that is. But if you aim for around 100cal/kilo, you should be pretty close to on track.
