How to save my basil plant?

I got a basil plant in a pot about two weeks ago. The planter also has Thyme and Oregano that are doing perfectly fine if that makes any difference. It's in direct sunlight like it says and I've watered it every night before bed. The leaves are all dropping and starting to wilt. Can I clip them all off and freeze them/use them real quick? If I clip them ALL off, should I leave the main stems or just cut it down to the potting soil?

Re: How to save my basil plant?

  • I think you may be watering too much. Try switching to every other day. Also, make sure the pot has some covering (mulch or pinestraw) to help it hold water. I've noticed also some of my herbs and plants wilt in the middle of the heat of the day but bounce back when it cools off. It's best to clip them in the morning before the sun get bright if you decide to clip them.

  • Also if you want to freeze them, do so in a little olive oil in ice cube trays. Drying basil loses a lot of taste.
  • I think the PP who suggested watering every other day and getting something for the top of the soil is probably spot on for saving the plant.

You can freeze the leaves for easy use by putting about a Tbsp of fresh leaf in an ice cube tray, then pouring water over it and freezing like regular ice cubes.  They're fabulous in flavored lemonades, and if you want to use it for cooking, just set out the number of ice cubes you need on a rag. The ice will melt and you'll have basil ready to use and still delicious.
