Middle name help

Our dd's middle name is Catherine (a family name). I wanted to use Rose as a middle name for our baby if it's a girl to honor my grandmother who struggled with cancer for 10 years and was an inspiration to me. The issue is that I HATE that it's a "filler" and people will just assume I'm using it because Rose is in fashion. We have a lot of great family names that I can choose from like Alice is my mom's middle name and Kay or Jane after my MIL. I don't know what to do. What would you do?

Re: Middle name help

  • First name gives it more meaning.   Rose Kay lastnamehere sounds nice.
  • none of those names are my style, so I can't help there, I do agree with pp that the first name has more meaning, so if you wanted to use something to honor someone I would make it the first name.

Use Rose if it is that important.  Who cares what other people assume?  It is not like it is going to come up that often after the excitement of the birth wears down.  The significance will have meaning to you and your daughter.  That is what is important.

This. Besides, Jane and Kay are arguably filler names as well; only Alice really isn't. I think Alice Rose and Alice Jane are very pretty FWIW.

  • If people do think it's a filler- WHO CARES!? Most people aren't even going to know MN as she gets older anyway and the fact that it has meaning makes it an even better choice. Like others said....2  other choices could also be considered fillers too.
  • If the name has meaning to you, use it. Who cares if it's a "filler" mn? My DD's middle name is Ann, which is super common and I guess would be considered a filler, but it was my grandmother's name and DH's mom's mn so it meant alot to us. I think Rose is a very pretty name, and even better that it has such meaning to you. Used for a mn or first name, I think you should go for it!
  • Thanks so much! I can't use Alice as a first name because it blends with our last name. Our last name is one syllable so Rose and Kay sound strange to me as a first name. We are going to keep Rose as the middle name.
  • Don't worry about what other people think.  I think Rose is a great middle name.  I struggled with it for a while because it seems like it's the Marie/Lynn/Ann of today, but it's a classic, beautiful name.  It's timeless.  If you really want to use it to honor your grandmother, I say go for it.  It will have very special meaning to you, and someday to your child if you have a girl.

I love Rose as a first name. ?I also don't think people are going to judge your middle name as a "filler". ?That happens on the Baby Names board but not much in real life, as far as I can tell. ??
