Ava won't eat ANYTHING!

She hasn't actually eaten a meal all week, except for picking at her breakfast each morning and eats her blueberries and drinks milk at each meal, but that's it.  She literally just sits there and won't eat.  I don't mean that she is just being picky--she literally just sits there and won't touch her plate.  It's like she just isn't interested or doesn't get hungry.  She isn't ill.  She even refuses her favorites.  I know toddlers can be like this, but how long exactly should I let her go eating practically nothing and what should I do about this?

  • Justin has been hard to tempt with food lately, too.  I think his two year molars are the problem.  He just doesn't want to have much to do with food at all, but fortunately I can still get him to eat a little yogurt or applesauce sometimes.  I find that I have better luck with softer things right now but he really doesn't want much of anything.

I don't really have any advice on how long to let it go on.  I imagine that she will get really hungry one of these days and will eat great for you.  I just wondered if her molars could be causing the problem.

  • Good idea!  My dentist cousin said she couldn't see or feel anything yet, but that was when we were at the hospital having Charlotte, so it's been a few weeks.  I will have to check back there again.  Now that you mention that, she has been getting extra fussy about teeth brushing.

  • I can't feel Justin's teeth, either, and I don't try very often because he bites down on me!  Little brat!   ;)

But, what I've noticed is that he is sticking his fingers way back in his mouth all the time, especially on one particular side, and he'll stick a soft spoon or other thing back there too.  I know the pedi told me that the molars can take up to a few MONTHS to come in, even before you see anything back there.  They are so close in age, I wouldn't be surprised if Ava was starting down the same path.

  • We have the same issue only every 3 or 4 days he will all of a sudden eat us out of house and home.  I will say though that asking him what he wants helps.  Even if it isn't the most nutritionally sound thing at least he gets a few bites in when he refuses all else.  Like the other day he wanted chef boyardee spaghetti and meatballs and heck if I was going to tell him no... at least it was food.

  • Does she like chocolate milk? I started mixing Carnation Instant Breakfast powder with her milk when Lily got like that.  If anything at least it was giving her some more protein and calories.  Just offer her whatever she'll eat  throughout the day - even if it isn't the healthiest of choices - toddlers can be so picky.  As long as you're offering a variet of things in addition to her 'go to' foods, she'll eventually grow out of it.
