Baby Names

Avery

I have loved the Avery for a girl for years. When I was pg with DD this was what I originally wanted to name her, but every name book or website I visited listed the meaning as "ruler of the elves" or "elf ruler". This bothered mean because I thought it was just so odd, so we picked a different name. I've noticed that it has become quite popular recently, so I'm wondering, is there a different meaning out there or do most people not really care that much about the meanings of names? I still think it is a beautiful name and would love to use it in the future, I'm still just a little hung up on the meaning!

Re: Avery

  • For the most part, people do not care or they don't know. I love the name Avery and would have used it for my girl, regardless of the meaning. The only meanings I would stay away from if it were something really bad- like devil worshipper. LOL

A meaning like "elf ruler" isn't going to jinx the child's life or determine anything good or bad for them. Not worth giving up a name you love, IMO.

  • I don't think people really think too much about name meanings.  As far as the meaning for Avery goes, it's not too bad.  If you like it, use it.

  • I don't think a lot of people look up or pay much attention to the meaning of names. ?My neighbor's daughter is Avery and she is adorable! I love the name!
  • I don't really care about name meanings. Our dd is named Sarah which means princess and while that is a cute meaning, I would have still picked Sarah if it meant something odd.
  • I love it...don't worry about the meaning.
  • We are naming our daughter Avery and although we laughed a little about the meaning, it's not stopping us. Partially because it is one of only 3 girl names we agree on!

Funny you said this since it isn't a girl name. LOL. But I love it for a girl. Good choice!

  • Thanks! My mom said the same thing about not being a girl's name, but it was actually way more popular for girls than boys in 2008. We thought about using it for either gender though.
  • I looked up the meaning when I was pregnant, but never really thought twice about it. Even funnier, we really like Olivia if we had another girl and the meaning is "elf army". At least we'd have the leader and the army :)
