My edd is october 4th. When should I stop working my boss is hounding me for an answer. I was going to cash in my two weeks vacation before I went on matenity leave. what did any one else do?? thank you for the help.
My daughter was born two weeks late, so cashing in two weeks of vacation starting two weeks before my EDD would not have worked out too well. It's called an ESTIMATED date of delivery for a reason
I worked until the Friday before my Sunday night induction.
Mommy to DD1 (June 2007), DS (January 2010), DD2 (July 2012), and The Next One (EDD 3/31/2015)
I worked up until DS was born (I was at work the day before I delivered). Barring any complications, I wanted to avoid just sitting around waiting for the baby and maximize my maternity leave time.
i think it depends on how your time off will be handled. i am supposed to have my baby with 8 weeks left in the year so i will be on STD for 7 weeks of that. since i can't carry over my vacation into next year i will lose it if i don't use it before the baby is born. so i'll probably take at least a week off before my due date.
I worked right up til my due date. Then I worked 1/2 days til baby was born (1 week late). It was actually one of the smarter things i did because I would have been going stir crazy if I had just stayed at home FT waiting for the baby to come.
Although many people like to work up until the day baby is born so as to maximize time with the baby, I believe you need a little rest before baby comes. Giving birth takes a lot of energy and a woman needs to be well rested to do this. Also, you won't get much sleep after baby comes, so I like to get a little before then. Furthermore, the time off is nice to prepare for baby, like by getting the house ready, doing a bit of shopping, and spending time with DH if possible. However, if you already feel you have time to do all of these things, then by all means, I would work until the last day. They are still so little when you go back to work and it's nice to spend that time with them.
I worked up until the day before I delivered at 41 weeks. The last couple of weeks were hard, but it was good to stay busy! I wanted to save all the time I could for maternity leave.
I really think it depends on how you feel. I was planning on working up until I had my daughter. Then the last week before my due date, I decided that it would be my last week - I was just exhuasted. However, my DD had other plans and came 1 week early so I ended up working the day before I delivered. But had she not made her apperence that week, I would have been done. However, that could be why I was so tired that week. Babies sometimes have plans of their own so while you can estimate a time off, you won't know for sure. It also depends on your benefits too (and FMLA if applicable).
Work until the very end unless your doctor tells you to stop or if you are not going back to work, then cash in your PTO and take some time to yourself. Honestly, I don't understand why people stop working before the baby comes. In all states (other than CA I believe) you only get 12 weeks total regardless of when the baby comes so why would you burn any of that time sitting at home waiting for the baby to arrive. Trust me, that sucks. I ended up on bedrest with #2 and had to use 2 weeks of my maternity leave. Going back to work and putting my DD in daycare at 10 weeks was not easy. I wanted that time with her. WIth #1, I worked until I headed to the hospital and had all 12 weeks of my leave with my DD. Also, check with HR but you might be able to use that PTO time during your leave to cover your unpaid time. At my company, I was able to use 1 week PTO for the 1st week before my STD kicked in and then I used another week after the STD benefits ended but I was still out on leave so I ended up still getting a paycheck for most of each of my leaves.
With DS #1, I was off on bedrest for one week prior to his arrival. Looking back, it was nice and quiet, I read a lot of books, and watched a lot of movies....something I have never done since then. I was also horribly uncomfortable, it was late June and hot, and we couldn't go out to dinner/movies/etc.
With DS #2, I drove to work with contractions and made it all the way into the parking lot before I couldn't breathe. That was probably pretty ridiculous, but I wanted to save all my time for after his delivery. I had a C-sec the next morning.
I was due 3/26. My last day of work was 3/13. My daughter didn't make her appearance until 4/5. So I had almost a month off work before birth. Then I took 10 weeks off after, and am back at work part time.
I worked until the day before I was induced. I wasn't planning on being induced so I actually asked my Dr. if I could go in for a minute before heading to the hospital (he sent me right from my regular appt - I was 1 week overdue and my fluid was low). He said "no."

I planned to stop working the Friday before my due date (I was due on Monday - so my first day of maternity leave was my due date). It was tiring at the end but doable if you want to try to save your time/leave for when the baby arrives. Just make sure to rest at night (well, you may not be sleeping well but nix the after-work errands and chore and drink LOTS of water throughout the day if you do plan to work up until the end.
Edit - the reason I had a planned last day was b/c I was worried that if I worked until I went into labor I'd leave things unfinished at work, with my desk a mess, etc. so I wanted to give myself and my bosses a deadline for projects! However, I could have gone into labor early which would have meant work left undone anyway.
I planned on working until the Friday before my due date, but at my OB appointment the week prior, they found my blood pressure was elevated so I was told had to stop working then. DD decided to come that day anyway so I guess it was a good thing the doctors told me I was done working!
