  • Yeah, it's a blood clot in the lungs.  I would imagine they would have him on blood thinners to try to dissolve the clot.

It's different from a pulmonary embolism in that it originated in the lungs, and not somewhere else like the embolism.

  • My husband had a pulmonary embolism in his lung, also a blood clot, he is now on coumadin (sp?) and it should dissolve.

  • Sometimes they do a surgical procedure called an embolectomy--they thread a catheter, usually through the groin, all the way to the clot and then drag it back out.  If they do this, there is the off chance they will "drop" th clot and it will dislodge and work it's way back into the lungs, except that it's now loose.

The other way it can be treated surgically is to use the same catheter method but instead of dragging it back out, they leave it in place and insert a stent or mesh to trap it in place so it doesn't dislodge.

The third option is to leave it alone and treat with clot busting drugs.

Method of treatment depends on the exact location and your dad's overall health.

Good luck to your dad.  I saw you responded to my post about my dad below--this is the second miraculous recovery my dad has had in almost 4 years.  The last was when his lung collapsed while he was in a remote area on vacation and he had to be medflighted from the woods in northern Michigan.  (He also has COPD).  I think prayers pulled him through both times.  Let's start a prayer circle--I'll add your dad when I pray for my own if you do the same for my dad.

  • Bubbly, thanks for explaining the difference, I wasn't sure what the difference was.  I'm new to this whole blood clot thing.
