Temporary Childcare

We started visiting daycares before I was pregnant and found two centers we love.  We got on the waiting lists for both as soon as I found out I was pregnant, but, unfortunately, the waiting lists are at least 1 to 1 1/2 years with no guarantee we will get a spot within that timeframe.

I'm planning to take between 3-6 months of maternity leave, but there is still a good chance we won't have a spot when I need to go back to work.  So, we're trying to come up with some alternatives.

We're considering a temporary nanny and found one agency that screens and recommends them.  The good thing about the agency is that they guarantee a nanny eveyday you're registered with them.  In other words, if the nanny assigned to us find something permanent and quits or is sick, they'll have someone there the next day.  The downside, though, is that, in addition to the $16-20 per hour we'll have to pay the nanny, we'll also have to pay the agency $35 per day.

Any suggestions about how we might be able to find a temporary nanny without using an agency?

Any other suggestions about temporary childcare options?

Thanks!
