Red blotches on face after eating?

I find this a bit amusing b/c I posted yesterday about wanting to give peanut butter to Luke since we have no known allergies.....

I just fed Luke lunch: whole wheat pita bread with hummus, strawberries, and cheese. He has had all of those food items multiple times before. After he finished, I noticed red blotches all over his mouth and cheek areas and a little on his tummy and arms where the food touched (I think). He acts 100% fine and I washed it off of him real good just in case it was just an irritation from touching his skin.

My neice had this happen with spinach and just the other night when I gave her eggplant for dinner. My sister is taking her to the doctor for her 1 year this week so she is going to ask then.

Is this normal? Should I not give those foods for awhile even though he has them often and has had no reaction before?

He doesn't go to the doctor for another 2 months so I think I'll see what the doctor tells my sister since it looked like the same exact thing.

  • Oh, and I did google, but I'm not finding much.

  • I'm on a strawberry kick right now- in 3 posts in the last 1/2 hour I have said that pedi told me strawberry was high allergy food- but since LO already had strawberries I am not sure- that is weird- maybe it was just a one time thing- I would wait a few weeks and reintroduce a small amount of strawberries and see if it returns.
  • My DS has had that reaction a few times now.  Once he broke out completely in hives.  Dr. had him tested for food allergies last week and it came back with a slight allergy to cow's milk.  Each time that happened he had been eating cheese.

  • DD gets this once in a while from foods she has had too. It makes no sense to me but she has never seemed to be bothered by it. She just had her 1 year appt and I forgot to ask but I'm not too worried cuz it goes away within 20-30 mins. Besides my own experience..I have no other answer for ya lol.
  • Not normal. caroline gets this from foods she is allergic to, citrus, BBQ sauce and ketchup (just last friday went in for this) she just gets red splotches where to food came in contact) Benadryl clears it right up!

FWIW your body has to have had 1 previous exposure to have an allergic reaction. And you can start a food allergy on the 2nd try or the 100th try, it can happen at any time. Strawberries we were told no until after 1 year, peanutbutter and wheat too because they are high allergins.

I agree with Jar-----it's not always the first or fifth time that it happens.  For me I ate eggs my entire life--on and off---I had weird things when I was little (rashes and such)--but until my body said "screw you woman for giving me eggs"---it was fine--and then one day all hell broke loose and I had hives from head to toe---they lasted months straight---got tested and voila--allergic to eggs.

My DS gets these rashes all over his face and body---every time from milk products--so we're assuming he's allergic--going for testing in the next week.  I've heard everyone has a little allergy to strawberries--and it's to different extents from person to person as to what you can handle.  I'm not going to give DS any until at least 12 mos just to be safe....and watch him closely.

  • does it kind of look like this?

that is a pic of it bad - but we realized it was mandarins. but she didnt get the allergy until about 2 years old. so it was weird that it ended up being that.

  • Yes, punkfiction, it looked exactly like that!!!!!

Hmmm....interesting about it happening on the 1st consumption of the food or the 100th. I didn't know that.

I'm thinking it may have been the strawberries only b/c they are high on the allergin list. Or the cheese???? Geez!

  • Id take your LO to get tested, by an allergist. DD had cheese and other dairy products for about 2 months and then one day she had a reaction. We got her tested and she has milk, egg, and peanut allergies. She had eaten the same cheese pasta the week of the reaction and then a few days later had the same food and had swelling, redness, itching, etc. We carry an epi pen with us at all times now and have take ALL dairy, peanut, egg products out of her diet. You have to read labels and be very very very catious of what you eat vs. feed LO to not cross contaminate foods, etc. Some kids have a serious reaction where others may just have hives for a few hours. Go get tested! And in the meantime I would hold off on any sort of dairy and strawberries.
