so i've been dealing with a summer cold since last weekend. i got out the list my doctor gave me of meds that i can take, and got some tylenol allergy to knock it out.
i can now finally breathe, but now it's moved to a nasty cough, so next on the list for cough is Robitussin or Robitussin DM. I had the DM at the house, so i took some last night right before bed, so of course i slept through it working, and then i took another dose this morning before leaving for work.

I feel completely knocked for a loop! i haven't been a teetotaler during this pregnancy, and have had the occasional small glass of wine every few weeks or so, and it's had zero effect on me, but WOW. this is totally different.
baby & i may be rockin' out to some phish or DMB at work for a couple of hours until this stuff wears off...I just can't believe this stuff is approved to take!
Re: robitussin DM
I'm curious was it your doc that approved the Robitussin DM? I'm getting over a nasty head cold as we speak. The doc's office was very adamant about me taking only plain Robitussin because they contain other ingredients + alcohol.
this. This is what the approved Robitussin should look like. The only active ingredient should be guaifenesin :
it's on the list of meds that are considered "relatively safe" (with a note that it's obviously better to avoid taking any) from my OB's office.
under "cough," there's plain robitussin OR robitussin DM, delsym or mucinex, according to directions.
i should have stuck with mucinex, but i figured it might be stronger, since it's just newly OTC.
She was very clear that her dr. said it was ok. Why would you try to scare her? DM is a class C according to the FDA, the same as regular robitussin.

I figured. Every office has their list. Mine sent me on a wild goose chase searching for the plain Robitussin (hard to find @ my CVS). They told me to avoid the DM or anything with extra letters like the plague. Hope you feel better!
believe you me, i'm feeling GREAT right now.
the more i google, i see conflicting things, but none of them say DM has ever had any bad effects, some just say to steer clear of it (i'm guessing because of the alcohol content).
the fact that i took it on an empty stomach probably didn't help matters. i ate a banana & a bowl of cereal as soon as i came to work, but i guess it had already been absorbed by then.
plain Robitussin is a class B not a C like DM. So no, its not the same. I was curious why her doctor let her take DM and mine said "hell no" to it.
The end.
Tigergreen - again, I hope we both can shake these nasty summer colds. Feel better and I hope the DM doesn't get you too "loopy" as you mentioned
