Two Under 2

Nursing #1 while pregnant with #2

I will, of course, ask my midwife about this at my first appointment, but in the meantime...

I am newly pregnant with #2 and DS#1 still nurses twice a day at 14 months.  Is there anything I need to do or be aware of if I continue nursing while pregnant?  Other than that it takes way too much energy to do both at once!!!  (Already figured that one out...)

Re: Nursing #1 while pregnant with #2

  • it's completely safe to nurse while pregnant, unless you have been put on bedrest or told not to have intercourse. and the reason for that is because a small amount of oxytocin is released while breast feeding, or nipple stimulation. not enough to start contractions,  but you need to be extra careful if you've been told to, and weaning will be necessary at that point.

otherwise yeah, it's all good, you won't be taking any nutrients away from the baby inside of you. the taste of your breast milk will change though, and your baby may not like it anymore.

  • I nursed DD up until about 2.5 weeks ago so until around 3.5 mo pg and had no issues. My OB had no concerns and didn't see a problem with it if I wanted to continue longer (which I didn't).  I have heard that your milk will change around 4 mo pg in preparation for DC#2 and thus DC#1 may not be into nursing due to that.  I never reached that stage based on how DD responded.

  • Like pp said...the taste of your milk may change and cause DC to self wean.  Also, your supply may decrease.  At 3 months pregnant my supply almost dried up so I just weaned DD at that point.

    This exactly for me.

  • My OB told me by 20 weeks pregnant I should stop nursing because my body would be very drained.
  • My dd (almost 18 months) is still nursing before bed for a couple of minutes but that's about it.  I'm 19 weeks now Big Smile

  • I just stopped nursing DS about a month ago. My milk supply was dropping continuously so it sort of helped with weaning. It worked out fine until then (about 17 weeks).

  • Thank you for posting.  I'm in the exact same position!
  • I got pg with #2 when DD was 10 months old and I continued to nurse her until 15 months - which was 6 months into my pregnancy.  Other than being completely exhausting, my nips also killed like a biotch.  I stuck with it though because DD was not ready to wean yet.  I had no supply issues, and DD never indicated that there was a difference in taste or anything at all.  Just make sure you are eating and drinking enough to keep up with this - it's a lot.  They do recommend that if you're at risk for pre-term labour that you wean by 6 months pregnant because the nipple stimulation cause contractions starting at about 6 months pregnant.  If you're not at risk for pre-term labour, the contractions are just mild and aren't a problem.  Good luck and congratulations!
  • I was nursing my daughter a few times a day when I found out I was pregnant with baby #2.  She was almost 14 months at that point, and was completely weaned by 15 1/2 months (at which point I was about 11 weeks pregnant).
