If you have a nanny...

Hi - just a few questions...

1. Do you pay for vacation and sick days? If so, how many?

2. How much do you pay an hour (if you are comfortable sharing this information)

3. Does your nanny bring her child with her? If so, how do you feel this is working out?

Thanks! I currently have a nanny that brings her 18 month old daughter. I work from home and I am trying to determine what I am going to do when the baby comes. I have a 13 month old now.

Re: If you have a nanny...

  • We were in a nanny share from 4-12 months. Then from 12-24 months, we took DD to a SAHM who watched her out of her home. So like a nanny (there were no other babies -- the SAHM's kids were in school during the day) but not in our home.

    1. Yes, we paid for unlimited vacation and sick days for both nannies.

    2. In the nanny share (which was in California), we paid $8/hour when we shared care and $14/hour if we needed care but the other family didn't.

With the SAHM (in Texas), we paid a flat rate of $200/week. That was for roughly 40 hours/week, rarely more, sometimes less.

One of our friends just hired a nanny here in Texas, and they pay $10/hour.

    3. In addition to the other child in the nanny share (who was age 2), the nanny brought her own 4-year-old daughter. We loved the arrangement. The nanny's daughter adored DD and was like a big sister to her.

The SAHM had two boys, ages 8 and 11. As you might expect, they were less interested in DD than our old nanny's daughter, but they were still super-sweet and wonderful with her, and she loved them too.

  • 1. Do you pay for vacation and sick days? If so, how many?  Yes, 2 weeks vacation & sick days.  We did not put a limit on sick days but if they became excessive we would discuss

    2. How much do you pay an hour (if you are comfortable sharing this information)  flat rate $480/week for @ 40 hours

    3. Does your nanny bring her child with her? If so, how do you feel this is working out? she does not - he children are all grown.  but if she did - I would take into consideration the child's age and it might affect what we were willing to pay.

Our nanny offered to do cleaning for extra money - as much as I want the cleaning help I don't want her to make cleaning the priority.  I want my children to be first and I know that would cross my mind if her child(ren) were there.

Good luck on your upcoming new arrival!

  • 1- The few nanny's we've talked to/ friends use - all pay for 5 or 10 PTO days.

2- The nanny we're presently using is $7.5, but she's cheap.  The going rate is at least $8 if not $10.

3- I used a woman to watch DS for a couple days who is looking to nanny.  She watches her son too.  I personally will NEVER hire a nanny who is also watching her child.  A part of this problem was this woman in particular - she was WAY into her kid in an odd way.  But regardless - we felt she wouldn't give as much attention to DS because her son was there.

  • 1. Do you pay for vacation and sick days? If so, how many?  She gets 2 weeks paid vacation and unlimited sick days.  If she abused the sick days, I'd fire her but I don't want someone sick taking care of DS.  We pay her when we are on vacation too.

    2. How much do you pay an hour (if you are comfortable sharing this information)?  She makes over $20/hour- $650/week for 30 hours (three days)

    3. Does your nanny bring her child with her? If so, how do you feel this is working out?  Absolutely not.  I am strongly opposed to this- (I WOH so it's a bit diferent than your situation).  For me, I'd worry that the nanny would favor her child and I would rather send my child to dayare, in a structured setting, with multiple experienced caregivers and socialization, than pay a nanny to juggle her own children and mine.

  • 1. Do you pay for vacation and sick days? If so, how many?  2 weeks vacation plus unlimited sick time.  That turned out to be a problem because she was "sick" a lot.  She had had her own kids and any time they were sick or had a problem, she would call in sick.  If I had to do it over again, I would set a specific number.

    2. How much do you pay an hour (if you are comfortable sharing this information)  I paid approximately n a flat weekly fee but it turned out to be about $13 an hour.  That was really inexpensive in my area.  Here the norm is $15 an hour.

    3. Does your nanny bring her child with her? If so, how do you feel this is working out?  This was a HUGE problem for us.  I ended up firing my nanny and putting ds in daycare.  I would never hire a nanny with a child again.  My nanny didn't often bring her kids (they were school age) but after school they would often hang out at my place.  Any time one had a school project or a doctor's appt or other issue, she called in sick so she could take care of her kid.  It made her unreliable as an employee and affected me being late or having to call in sick.  I never knew if she would show up or how late she would be.  There was always some sort of problem she had to take care of.  If you hire a nanny with a child, make sure she has a backup plan if that child is sick- will she have to stay home or does she have someone to take care of the child?

  • 1. Do you pay for vacation and sick days? If so, how many?  2 weeks of PTO per calendar year to be used for vacation and sick.

    2. How much do you pay an hour (if you are comfortable sharing this information).  We pay $530 per week - were were paying $651 per week when all three were at an in-home DC so this is definitely the best and least expensive option for us.

    3. Does your nanny bring her child with her? If so, how do you feel this is working out?  No.

    1. Do you pay for vacation and sick days? If so, how many?

Yes - she basically gets a salary.  We give her 2 weeks vacation, 5 personal days and unlimited sick days (as well as the std holidays).  But, whenever we take a vacation, she gets vacation as well and she is paid for that.  She receives a paycheck each week of the year.

    2. How much do you pay an hour (if you are comfortable sharing this information)

We pay a little over $30 an hour for about 40 hours a week.  We also pay for a cell phone for her ($50 a month on a family plan we have) and we pay a little extra for payroll services (annual fee of a few thousand $$).

    3. Does your nanny bring her child with her? If so, how do you feel this is working out?

No.  This is not something I'm personally a fan of...I just want my daughter (right now, there's only one) to be her sole focus while she's with her.  That's why we pay to have a nanny (there are other reasons - I like the convenience of in-home) but this is a primary one...otherwise, I might go with something like daycare.

  • 1.  Yes, 2 weeks vacation, any weeks we are on vacation and sick days (# not specified).

    2.  We play a flat $600/week for approx 40 hours.  If we go above that, she's $15/hour.

    3.  No, our nanny has grown children.  But my sister's nanny would bring her small children and it was kind of a nightmare for her.  The kids would trash the house and the nanny barely cleaned up.
