Exhausted After Daycare?

DS has only had 3 full days of daycare.  He does wonderfully, according to his providers.  Naps well, eats well and is always happy.  But every time I have picked him up, he is EXHAUSTED.  Last night, he went to sleep at 7pm, woke at 5:50 for a bottle, then went back to sleep and I had to wake him at 7:45 to get him dressed and out the door.  Is this normal?  Please tell me it gets better after they settle in!

  • 12 hours of sleep seems pretty normal to me.  I am sure he will get into a routine as he does it more often.

DS used to go to sleep around 7:30 and wake at about 6:30 before starting daycare.  I swear, he woudl have slept forever this morning if I hadn't woken him up.  As it was, he slept almost 13 hours!

  • This is normal and your LO will adjust.  Granted, my kids go to sleep early and get a full nights sleep.  My almost 16 month old goes down around 6:45 or 7 and my 3 year old is in bed around 7:15 and typically asleep sometime between then and 8pm.  They get up during the week at 6:30 and I let them sleep in on the weekends which tends to be anytime between 6 and 8am.  Sounds like your DS is getting the sleep he needs.

  • My DD is exhausted after daycare.  Before DD started daycare she would wake up a couple of times a night and now she sleeps. She also takes 2 - 2.5 hour naps on the weekends and only 15 min - 1 hour at daycare. I think it is the fact that there is so much going on and they don't want to miss anything and it is too loud. There is also a little boy in her classroom that likes to bug the little girls when they are sleeping.

  • That's normal.  DS was also completely exhausted at first and then got used to it.  Every once in a while, he still wears himself out there, though.
  • It definitely gets better... DD's main issue was that she didn't nap much in the first week, so she was absolutely exhausted. I remember on Wednesday morning, after two days of no napping, she was such a zombie that I was worried she was sick!

She's in her fifth week now and things are better, although she still has days like yesterday where she doesn't nap and then we pretty much bring her home, get some dinner in her, and get her to bed before she totally melts down!

I'm glad you posted this. DS did the same thing when he just started daycare. He was completely wiped out and slept for a long time each night. I figure the fact that it was such a brand new experience for him and constant activity with other babies around made him tired by the end of the day.

Now, 3 weeks in - he is not as tired and doesn't sleep through the night any more. This could also be related to the bad cold he picked up as well.

    Good luck to you!!
