I'm curious what you all think of the name? It's not terrible, but I don't think I like it well enough to pick it. I'm putting it on the list to see if I warm up to it.

Sorry, it is not my style. The only guy I know with this name goes by his middle name instead (and refuses to put Ira on anything because he doesn't like it either).
Reminds me of a character on a sitcom...can't remember which one. Helen Hunt was in it I think, they lived in NYC in an apartment, were newlyweds, had a dog. One of their friends or family members was Ira. Wish I could remember what show that was, I used to watch it all the time.
I happen to think it's a good name! I like it a lot. I think it's really weird that everyone has replied that it's an 'old man name' when half of the women on here are naming their babies Henry, William, and Jack. It's no more "old man" than those, and it's way more cool and uncommon! I happen to know brothers in their late 20's named Abe and Ira, and Ira is not embarassed in the least. No one even notices their names are 'old man' names, just that they are unusual. Just my two cents, I say think about it!

I see most people thought of the name similar to what I thought. Something just isn't right about it. I like that it's different, but I just don't think I like the name enough for mine :-)

It may not work if you have an obviously ethnic name that isn't Jewish (for instance, Ira O'Shaughnessy and Ira Cortez sound a little weird), but if you have a Jewish or more neutral (to the typical American ear) surname, I like it a lot. First thing I think of is Ira Gershwin, which is a positive association to me.
