Pet Question

Hey all!

I have 2 Yorkies who we have probably spoiled a little bit. They sleep in our bed and I was wondering what people did with dogs that slept in their bed when their babies were born or what you plan on doing. I'm not sure if getting up in the night with the 2 dos there will work well. I was thinking of moving them to the kitchen come August.

Thanks!

Re: Pet Question

  • I can't help you because my dog never slept in our bed but if you haven't already I would suggest posting this on the pet board.  They might have some good ideas for you.
  • Our dog sleeps in our bed - and that's where she'll stay as we have no intention of co-sleeping or even really having the babies sleep in our room.  I know that at least in the beginning, she'll get up with us during feedings and everything, but eventually she'll get tired and bored - like she has with other "new" things.

We have also put one of her beds in the nursery next to our rocker so she has a place to be while we're in there that already smells like her and everything - and she's already using it!  So hopefully that will lessen the blow.

I'd personally be leery of moving them to the kitchen so suddenly because that will be quite a few changes to their routine all at once and they may feel shunned and connect it with babies (sorry...can't remember when your ticker said you were due).  Can you train them to sleep on the floor on nice pallets or anything?  That may be better and they won't feel like they're being put in solitary confinement for no reason.

  • Ours are not bed sleepers...too dang big for that. They have their beds on the floor and there was never any issues during the month or two we co-slept.

  • We have 2 cats (which I know is different) but tey slept w/us b4 the girls were born and still do most nights - the girls sleep in their own room for the most part. any time we bring the girls in to co-sleep if it's a rough night, the kitties either ignore us and go back to sleeping at the end of the bed, or banish themselves to another room...I guess my point is I wouldn't change their sleeping arangements - your dogs will most likely adapt on their own...good luck!
  • Mine used to be bed sleepers, but I transitioned them out before my first DD was born. People can say what they will about what their plans will be when babies arrive, but I knew I wanted to be able to safely lay baby down without the dogs jumping up. I did it while I was pg, and honestly they had no issues whatsoever. I'm glad that I did, because despite saying I would never co-sleep, I did. With all three of my little ones.

My dogs were already crate trained - and used to spending time there during our work hours. It worked out once the baby arrived that they were out of the crates all day while I was home and in the crates to sleep at night (their choice) and everyone was happy.

I love my dogs - love them! - but this worked out really well for us to ensure that everyone has a happy place to snooze and is totally safe. Honestly, now that the kids are in their own beds and the dogs are in theirs, everyone sleeps better.
  • I would get the dogs out of the bed because sleeping in your bed is a power issue for dogs and there is no way for you to know if the babies will sleep in your bed until you bring then home. I know so many people who are certain that they will never co-sleep until they fall asleep with the baby in the bed for the first time and actually sleep for 4 hours because the baby is content. Also if you get an arms reach co-sleeper or put a pac n' play next to your bed for a couple of weeks the dogs can easily get in it.

I would not put the dogs in another room though. You don't want them to feel displaced. Can you crate them in your bedroom? I have had the co-sleeper set up in our room for awhile now so that the dog is accustomed to it and her dog bed is next to it.

It is great that you are thinking of this now.

  • Our dog had slept in our bed from hte day he came home, but recently I have been been taking up more nad more space, and it just wasn't working anymore. We started transitioning him to a bed next to ours on the floor about a month ago, and it is working pretty well.

We got him a really comfortable doggie bed, and just moved him down there at bed time. It took a few weeks for him to get the idea, but it is working. He still comes up with us as soon as the sun comes up - but I am okay with that :o

  • Our Maltese sleeps in bed with us.  The girls have been in their cribs since we came home on Friday.  We feed them in their room as well.  We have two chairs in there.  We figured this is his bed and we can't completely uproot his life.  Plus, we didn't want them co-sleeping with us based on mh's work schedule and some other things.  It was the best decision for us.

  • Ha!!! I know spoiled! I have a morkie and a Yorkie Poo and they are soooooo attached to us. I can't go to the bathroom without them coming in with me. They have slept in our beds too since the day we got them. When we brought home the girls we held the dogs while they sniffed their carseats, blankets and them. You HAVE to do that. The first day my morkie had to be around them non stop. My Yorkie poo immediately got jealous and wanted NOTHING to do with them and slept on the couch the whole day....it was really sad. We let the dogs still sleep with us and if one of the babies were in bed with us they were totally fine. After a week or so they just accept them being there and go on being a dog!! Don't worry about doggy kisses either. It is inevitable that the dogs will kiss them ALL OVER!! They like the formula so don't leave any bibs or burp rags where they can get to them. They are super protected of them and lay on them whenever they get a chance....it's really cute! Have fun with all of them!!!!
