Would you do this?

DS really wants to "camp out" w/ DH in the backyard. DH is all for it and wants to get a small tent.

However, we have a fox that lives somewhere around our house and we see him at least a couple of times a week in our yard. DH also says the fox has been peeing in our back yard (don't ask me how he know this), so we know he visits the back yard.

The fox doesn't show any signs of being rabid or anything and always runs away when he sees us. But still, it's a fox

Re: Would you do this?

  • I think I'd make sure the thing is dead or gone first.  As far as peeing in the yard, I'd just  get a cheap tent and just throw it out when you're done camping out.  IDK.
  • I would.

  • It's a fox, not a bear.
  • Nah, probably not. ?Could they go camping somewhere else? ?Of course, when you go camping elsewhere there's always the chance of other varmint scampering about the campgrounds. ?

  • Sure! The fox will be more scared of them then anything.

DS wants to camp out too ("sleep outside with Unkie") So, he and my brother/his uncle will be camping out in my parents back yard sometime this summer. I'm not worried about it, I used to camp all the time as a kid/teen. DH and I still do camping trips every year.

  • ugh I have the same issue, B wants to sleep outside under a tent and we have a opossum. I am not having her sleep out there with that thing.

  • Of course. It's a fox. It will be more afraid of you than you are of it.

  • This definitely falls into the category of overprotectiveness to me.  It's a fox, not a bear, and as far as the pee goes - it's outdoors.  There is bird, squirrel, possum, cat, dog, god only knows what kids of pee/poop out there.  If it doesn't show signs of rabies, I have no earthly idea why you wouldn't allow this.  In a tent, with a tarp down?  Sleeping bags, etc?  The thing isn't going to chew through and gnaw his arm off, I'm sure of it.  What a fun experience for them both.  Let them!
  • Yes, I would. Its pretty likely that it won't even come in the yard when they are out there. Its more scared of you.

We used to camp out in the backyard at our cottage and we had black bears that came onto the property sometimes. They never once came when we were out there. The scent of humans generally scares wildlife away.

  • Just a clarification -- I don't care that the fox (or any other animal) pees in the back yard. I only mentioned it because it means that the fox is hanging out in our backyard on a regular basis.
  • Yes. It's just a fox. What do you think happens when people go camping outside of their backyards ... they tend to encounter wildlife ...
