  • I've only used butternut squash with my LO but you could do acorn also.

  • butternut or acorn.
  • So here's my question about that - is butternut squash sweet on it's own? Or only when we add lots of brown sugar to it for us adults?
  • Butternut.  And it is really easy to make too.

    1. peel, seed and cut into cubes
    2. place on tinfoil covered backing sheet
    3. drizzle with olive oil and water
    4. cover with second piece of tinfoil
    5. bake at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes or until the veggies are really tender

You can do this with a sweet potato at the same time.

From there, I use either my hand masher, blender or cuisenart to blend into a puree.

Once pureed, I put the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze. '

Then i will put the cubes in freezer bags and take one or two out at a time.

Monks likes to have different flavors, so I end up mixing the various veggies together.

I think adults are programmed to think that squash is not sweet enough. Most of the babies that I know on homemade foods find the squashes to be just right for them.

Butternut and acorn squash are pretty sweet on their own, especially if roasted instead of boiled or steamed.

  • I've given butternut, acorn, and zucchini.
  • The reason I ask about sweetness is b/c I thought the idea was to start with non-sweet stuff (though I'm not sure this actually matters from what I've read recently), and if squash is sweet, then why is it one that we are supposed to start with (if you believe the don't start with sweet stuff rule of thumb). Hmmmmmm.
