PT'ing help please...

DS will be 3 next month.  For awhile we've been talking about the potty, but not doing a lot as far as training.  He will sit on it before a bath, and will occasionally ask to use it, but does not go when he does sit on it.  He is starting to ask to have his diaper changed, but will also hide when he poops and deny that he is pooping.  For awhile I've felt like he just needs to feel himself going without a diaper on.  He has never really minded a dirty diaper.  Today we bought big boy underwear, and I had planned every day after his nap to give him a few hours diaper free.  We tried it today.  He peed about an hour into it.  I felt bad because he was pretty upset saying no underwear, that he wanted his diaper on.  I told him it was ok and that next time pee can go in the potty.  I told him he's getting to be such a big boy.  Am I rushing him, or do I just need to be consistent and more purposeful?

Before we ever started pting I would put DD on the potty every morning when she would wake up and most time she would go.

It was a long road for us and she was pee trained for about 2 months before she pooped on the potty.
