Working Moms

Anyone work til 6pm or later

My job requires me to work 11-8 two days a week, 9-6 two days a week and Fridays are always 8-5.  I hate hate hate working 11-8.  I feel like I miss out on precious time with DD before she goes to bed.  Right now she goes to bed between 10-11pm ... and while I know this will not last forever ... I do hope to put her to bed everynight.  Anyone else in the same boat as me?  What are your evenings like?

Re: Anyone work til 6pm or later

  • I am 9-6 M-TH and 9-5 on Friday. The 9-6 days suck so I could only imagine your 11-8 days!  The only good thing is your home longer in the monrings those days

My evenings consist of me getting home at 6:20, changing, dinner with DH and DD, then some playtime (bath every other night) and then she's in bed at 8 and DH leave for work shortly thereafter.

I wish I could have a 9-5 or even an 8-5 schedule, it would just give me that extra hour with both DH and DD.

  • I work 9am-6pm or 9:30-6:30 M-F although most Fridays I can leave at 5:30.  My commute is usually about 1 hr so I don't get home until 7-7:30 most days.  It is really upsetting, I feel like I am missing out on so much too. I can't imagine your 11-8 days :(   When I get home, I will nurse (if DS isn't napping) then pump then make dinner if DH hasn't already made something.  After we eat dinner, I try to squeeze in a bath if DS is awake then he goes to bed at 10-11pm.  We don't have a set schedule yet though...I'm still trying to figure out what works best.  I know eventually DS will have to go to bed earlier but his sleep patterns aren't well established yet and I am working on getting him to STTN. I feel for you and I hope it gets better!!

  • I work 12-8 on Mondays.  Today was my first day back to work, actually, and he was asleep when I got home.  I console myself that I get to spend Monday mornings with him and he is able to have a shorter daycare day and time with my DH at night.
  • I worked 230om-1230am for the last 2 years. I enjoyed the time during the day I had with DS and then DH put him to sleep those 4 nights of the week. I would just call DH after I knew DS was asleep to check on him. There are other days I would work until 730pm and I would just make sure I would get home in enough time to kiss DS to sleep, it was hard on those days because I did not see him at all because I was working 12 hours. When I go back to work I will be working 3 12 hour shifts a week and I will just have to deal with things so my LO only have to be in childcare 3 days a week.

  • On the positive side, most of us have to leave for work at 7 and miss the cute morning time.  And you miss the normal baby cranky time of 5-7 pm.  I think it's nice to have a day or two when you can have the morning with the baby because it's usually a nice time of day to take a walk or play with the baby after she wakes up.  Try to enjoy it!
  • I work 4 nights a week and chose to do that so my DD only has to go to daycare 2 days a week. Although I am not there to put her to bed 2 nights a week my DH is. By my working at night she is with a parent more than she is at daycare and that is why we do that schedule. Another positive is that it has created a great bond between DH and DD. However if you are really unhappy with working nights you should look for a different job or speak to your employer because you happiness does matter.
