How much for groceries and household stuff/mo?

For a family of 4 (with one in diapers) what do you think of $550-$600 per month?  We shop every two weeks and the big bill (mostly food, some household stuff) is around $200 and then I usually go to Sams for $30-$50, maybe another store for household stuff for $25, and probably another $25 or so in between shopping visits for milk, fruit, etc. I'm getting awesome with coupons and we also only eat out maybe twice a month.  Is this reasonable?  Could I spend a little more and STILL be reasonable?

Thanks

  • That's about what we spend for a family of 4.  I think spending $600 is reasonable but anymore would maybe be on the high end.  My goal is always under $500 but that's hard to achieve for us.
  • I follow a pretty strict monthly budget and I have $150/ week ($600 a month) budgeted out for groceries.  When DD was in diapers and needing formula and baby food that number was $175.

  • My budget for our soon-to-be family of four is also $150/week. It won't change once the baby is born.
  • I think it's about right. I spend about $700-750 month on groceries/household stuff. Only one is still in diapers. I probably spend too much on junk we don't need, so take off some for that, plus I also buy a lot of fresh fruit and a lot of frozen dinners (which can be like $3-4/each). But, we also don't eat out very often and when we do, it comes out of a different account.
  • For a family of 5 we budget $800 a month for food, pet food, and household stuff.

  • I think that sounds about right.

  • We (family of 3) spend $600 a month in groceries which may or may not include household stuff.  I sometimes pick that stuff up at Target.  I also buy a lot of organic so that jumps us up.  I also buy DS's diapers from amazon.  They are cheaper there.

  • That sounds good to me! I spend between $120-$130 per week for our family of four.
  • We spend more like 100/week for a family of 3.  I am not sure how much extra a 2nd kid would add.

The household expenses might be a good area to cut back.  If you use more natural cleaning products (like vinegar and baking soda) and avoid convenience products like the swiffer, your misc. household expenses should be pretty tiny.

  • Well, for our family of 3, our grocery budget is $300/mo and incidentals is $60/mo (that includes diapers). Since shopping at Aldi's, we are coming i under $300. So, maybe for a family of 4, $400 + $100 ?
