Running Moms

I am looking to get into running...I know it is a slow process to build up endurance, but it has been an activity that I have always felt that I would enjoy and that would be a great outlet for me (but maybe I am just crazy!).

Any advice for a beginner runner?  When do you typically run?  Morning/evening?

TIA!

Re: Running Moms

  • I keep thinking I want to be a runner (!) but haven't quite gotten there yet.  I found some running clubs on https://www.seemommyrun.com/.  My SIL found a group near her and loves the friendships she's made there.

  • I recommend the couch to 5k training programs.  You can find it on coolrunning.com or google it.  It works you up to running a 5k in 8 weeks.  I'd find a race in your area that's in 2-3 months and sign up now.  It's the best motivation to keep with the program.  Get some good music, some running shoes, and give it a shot.  I do recommend getting fitted for shoes and investing in a good pair.

I usually run in the afternoon.  It just depends on what works best for you.

I don't always enjoy running while I'm doing it (often I do, but not always), but I'm always glad I've done it.  It's the best way to get in a good workout in a short period of time and it's awesome for regulating stress/mood and giving you time to think.

  • I haven't run since I had the baby but I can't wait to get back into it.  I usually run in the early evenings.  Invest in some good shoes.  GL!

This.  I listen to the podcasts that go with this program while I do my runs.  I'm currently in week 6 and signed up for a 5k race on August 8.  I get up at 5am because I am too tired (and lazy) to go in the afternoon or evening.  Good luck...running is the only exercise that I have ever been able to stick with and now I absolutely love it!

  • I ran a lot pre pregnancy and I started back slowly after my 6 week follow up and I agree with pp advice.  Cool runnings is a great resource.  Sign up for a race.  And start out slowly to avoid injuries.

I signed up for one on July 19th and it has been the best motivation for me.  I try to squeeze in runs (and 30 day shred) any opportunity that I can.  Either after work when the boys are still napping and DH is w/ them or I put them in the stroller and they go with me.  If I did not have that race coming up - I may blow of my run.

  • I run at night (8:30 pm) after the kiddies go to bed a few times a week and do a long run on Saturdays when DH is home.  I would start walking/running first and see if you can build up your distance.  Signing up for a 5K is also a good motivation.  Good luck!
