High-Risk Pregnancy

Heparin vs. Lovenox?

Just wondered if anyone had chosen to take heparin instead of lovenox?  I took lovenox throughout my first pregnancy but despite insurance its still pretty expensive.  I know most people switch to heparin at 36 weeks so I thought it might be easier to just take the heparin the entire pregnancy.  I'll have to start taking it while ttc as well because i'm on coumadin right now due to blood clots after my first pregnancy.

I might be wrong, but it is my understanding that Heparin does not come in pre-filled syringes.

  • I've been on heparin for this pregnancy and my previous pregnancy. It is A LOT cheaper and while it doesn't come in the prefilled syringe like the Lovenox, it is no problem at all to draw up. My perinatologists prefer heparin to Lovenox because it is easier to reverse in the event that there is a problem.

If I had a choice, I wasn't aware of it. That said, I happen to have excellent insurance and pay $5 for a 30 day supply of Lovenox (I get a statement saying that my insurance saved me $5000 on that alone every month!), and I'm guessing it would be the same co-pay for heparin. From what I've heard, heparin is even more painful and bruising than Lovenox. Given those two things, I'd opt for Lovenox and switching to heparin closer to term.

  • i didn't realize i had a choice either lol  then again, i have been on lovenox for 3 years now.  I had 2 strokes because of the birth control i was on, so i'll be on lovenox until 5 months after DC#2 is born!
  • In Canada, Innohep (heparin) shots do come in pre-filled syringes. I wasn't given the option of Lovenox and didn't really know what is was before coming on this board. I'm not sure if it is covered or not.
  • The thing about heparin is that it doesn't last as long as lovenox, so you have to give yourself more injections.  My personal experience is that heparin causes more pain and bruising, too.  I'm pretty content to be on lovenox until close to delivery, but I'm very fortunate and don't have a co-pay.

I'd say talk to your doc, and then see what you think.  :-)
