Working Moms

Retired In-Laws are "so busy."

The exact quote we heard last night was from my mil, "we hardly ever get to sit down and relax before 10:30 pm because we are so busy."

Busy doing what? MIL teaches a few piano students, but that is it. Do you ever hear us complain about being busy. I am a working mom of two children, one of which has autism. So basically running/organizing his weekly therapy program (he is in therapy 16 hours a week) and coordinating who takes him where each day, most often me, and coordinating my work schedule around everything, and dealing with all the insurance issues for his therapy, is a part-time job in itself.

Plus, all the regular responsibilities at home. . .I mean, seriously, she doesn't get it. Sorry, vent over for the day.

Re: Retired In-Laws are "so busy."

  • i think being "busy" is relative.  When i was one of the few single/childless women left in my group of friends I was really offended if my friends assumed I had tons of time to do stuff - just b/c I wasn't married and didn't have kids.

Just b/c someone doesn't work/have kids, etc - doesn't mean they don't have their schedule filled.... and sometimes part of that schedule is "relaxing time", too - esp if you are retired- you earned that, IMO.

Yeah- if you put your day up against her I'm sure anyone would say that YOU are crazy busy compared to her- but that doesn't mean she doesn't feel really busy, too, ya know?

  • Not sure why you are so up in arms about this?!?! Is it because they don't have time to see your LO's. My grandparents are retired and I can honestly say that they stay busy all.the.time. Sure, it is not the same as a working Mom with two kids type of busy, but it is still busy.
  • Oh, there is a history with my in-laws that I could go into, but I won't as it would take way to long. . .it was just a vent. I am better now.

  • I hear ya, sistah! My Mom always makes comments about being busy--or worse yet, making demands on ME--not stopping to think about how she comes off. But some people have to have everything be about them, KWIM?

Busy is relative--and for working mommies, sometimes it means "no time to eat or pee."

  • Definitely busy is relative! ?My FIL is "so busy" and complains a lot about walking the 3 blocks to the mailbox every day!
  • I hear you! Do they always try to "one up" you like they are busier, more stressed etc.

Reminds me of my friend who tried to compare taking care of a dog to having a baby/toddler! Sorry not the same!
