Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Ice cream for a 7 month old?

My mom wanted to give DS vanilla ice cream when she was visiting last weekend. I told her no and I think she thought I was being overprotective. I don't even know that babies that age are supposed to have dairy, plus the sugar. I figure when he is a little older, grandma can go to town giving him treats, but I just think he is too young. Am I overprotective, or nuts? Stick out tongue

Re: Ice cream for a 7 month old?

  • FIL wants to give DS all sorts of crap.  I told him he has to wait until 1 year.  After that he can have at it.

I did end up giving DS a bite of donut, some ice cream, and part of a gingerbread cookie.  I got sick of everyone else giving him his first fun things.

  • I don't think you're being overprotective!  I wouldn't let my 7-month old eat ice cream, either.
  • I let DD lick my ice cream cone last weekend and didn't think much of it. I wouldn't sit down and feed her a bowl of ice cream but I don't mind letting her try it. Yesterday she took a bit out of a french fry, lol
  • Meh, it's not the best thing in the world but a bite won't hurt them.  I let dd try some ice cream a couple of weeks ago, it was just 2 teeny tiny bites.

  • DS has had a few bites of ice cream, he gets licks of our popcicles.
  • I started giving DS some mild cheese and Yo Baby yogurt at 10 months.  It's probably ok for him to have a taste of ice cream, but my position is no sugar until his 1st birthday.
