Not a fun fourth for us

We rushed Addy to urgent care on Friday night with a 104.4 fever.  They diagnosed her with herpangina, the virus that causes hand, foot, and mouth disease.  She has blisters all in her mouth- but none on her hands and feet.  So she has had a really sore throat and mouth, fever, diarrhea, and runny nose.  :(  All weekend has been spent trying to get her to take fluids but the blisters in her mouth hurt so she won't drink anything. :(

So her diet has been fruit, ice cream, and jarred baby food.  Her fever finally broke today and the diarrhea seems to be gone.  She seemed a bit happier but still not drinking any fluids and she HATES to take her medicine.  I did manage to get about 7 oz in her today and combined with whatever she got from the fruit, I'm hoping we are not going to become dehydrated.  She has had wet diapers so that's good.

The doc said she's not contagious since her fever broke and she can go back to daycare, but the blisters could be in her mouth for a week!  A week of trying to force feed liquid is going to suck.

So we've been quarantined to the house all weekend...but I still put her in her little Fourth of July T-Shirt.  Hee.

I'm so drained.  I don't want to go to work tomorrow and leave her at daycare, but I have to.

Re: Not a fun fourth for us

  • That is not fun at all! Good luck getting fluids in her. Before I could get C to take any kind of cup she did really well with sonic ice. I'd get a cup of the ice, and she liked it.

  • OMG.   I was just about to b!tch about my 4th, but it seems so petty now compared to yours. (went to BFF's house and ended up leaving early totally P'd off because I HATE when people who have children give their judgemental/opinions when not asked for, and don't even try to "come off" as suggestions.  Get off your high horse and F/U!  Funny to me - she has no idea we left P'd off.  She thinks we left because, we're "still new parents and are overly sensitive to DS's spitting up/crankiness around other people."  Um, no, we're leaving because you're talking down to me and that comment, certainly didn't help things on the way out.) Obviously, I'm not over it.  Vent done.

Oh, it's not always about me....LOL.....I'm so sorry.  I dread the day K gets his first fever.  We're still battling his cold.  :::HUGZ:::

      LOL.

Avery- thanks for that suggestion-- I didn't think about crushed ice.  I'm going to try that tomorrow.

  • Aww poor Addy!!!

I second the ice.  Keanan caught HFM once, and by the time we found out he was no longer contagious, but we kept him home anyway because he still had the blisters.  He would not eat anything but applesauce and ice water so that is all he ate for a week.  He stayed home with DH and acted completly normal, you would never know he was sick except for the fact that he would not eat.

One other thing out ped suggested was a small mixture( (1/2 tsp each) of Mallox and benedryl. It coats the throat and helps with the pain a little.  That did seem to help him some.

I stayed home.  We are doing the maalox and benedryl mixture.  She HATES it.  I have to hold her down to take it.  I'm going to try the crushed ice water today.  I just couldn't send her to daycare when she's not drinking anything.  She will eat grapes and applesauce.

  • There are these things called Fruit Chillers in the canned fruit/applesauce section of the grocery store - you're supposed to freeze them, but I wonder if just refrigerating them would be okay?  Anything to help her eat, poor shmoo.  :(
  • Oh your poor little girl.  Hand, foot and mouth is NOT fun!!  My oldest had this when he was 13 months old.  He too only had the blisters in his mouth.  I would never wish this on anyone.  Hope your little one starts to feel better soon!!

  • I hope the ice helps. I agree, leaving a sick LO at daycare is so hard.

    GL!

  • I am so glad that you stayed home.

The Sonic ice is a great idea. Something else that worked for us when A was sick was to crush a Pedialite popsicle with a kitchen mallet. I fed A the little pieces with a spoon and that went pretty well.

Ugh! It really is the worst feeling.

  • Well she fought me on the ice...she is fighting me on everything lately.  I fear I have glimpsed what our teen years will be like.  LOL.

She did allow me to syringe the ice water in her mouth so that's something.  Next it's jello time.  She better like that stuff.

Oh yes cold Jello should work!  Did you try letter her do things herself?  I know with Keanan, he fights me more if I do it, but if I let him do things he will take it better. I bought the pedialyie freeze pops and cut those in half and let him feed himself.  It is messy, but gets the job done.  I normally cut the jello into cubes and let him feed himself.

  • How's sweet Addy doing this afternoon?
  • I hope poor Addy is feeling better. Everyone has given you great ideas. Remember a lot of the foods you are giving her have water in them, so they will help keep her hydrated.
