possibly TMI: Yeast infection (ugh...) from antibiotics? Help?

I am a little overwhelmed as I write this...My DD was prescribed amoxicillin for an ear infection last week that she got following a cold that continues to linger and now after about 5 days, I think she is getting a yeast infection around her butt.  It's not anywhere near as bad as the pics I have googled, but still, it's red around her anus and on one side there are little white bumps.  Of course this happens on a holiday weekend when the drs office is closed...

If anyone has encountered this, is there anything I can do to treat this until I call the pediatrician tomorrow?  Will this rash go away on its own?  I dabbed vinegar on her butt in a desperate attempt to help myself feel like I was helping, but not sure if that's an old wives' tale or what.

Oh, and as I'm checking her mouth for thrush, I realized that she just had a molar come in!  Poor thing!  She only has 5 teeth in the front, so I was not expecting a molar so soon...As if she doesn't have enough going on right now!

Thanks in advance!

  • Poor thing!  Sounds like she's been having a rough time!  DD had a yeast rash and our pedi told us to put monistat on it.  Not the insertable stuff...just the external cream that comes in the tiny little tube.
  • Loading the player...
  • The generic name is fluconazole (I think).  You probably already know this but the tube of cream I mentioned before comes in the same box as the insertable applicators.  Good Luck!

Oh, and can you call the 'on call' pedi and ask them about this?  That's what I would do!

  • DS had the exact same thing.  Doc said to use lotrimin af  creme two times a day and a traditional diaper ointment (desitin, butt paste, whatever) for any other diaper changes in between.  Keep the area dry and avoid using wipes when possible, and instead use a damp cloth then let DC airdry for as long as possible before putting the new diaper on (I just used another diaper and fanned DS dry)  It took a while to clear up and didn't completely go away until about a week or so after he stopped the antibiotics.  good luck and HTH!
  • Yep sounds like a yeast rash. It's actually easy to fix. Grab some neosporin AF (anti fungal) and spread it on the area during diaper changes. It does the same as lotramin so you could use that too. I just prefer the neosporin.
