My DH is FREAKING OUT over the $176 monthly payment. I keep telling him it's only for one year, and we can pay it down quicker by paying a little more than that. It's also for the protection of our family....but he's stressing me out over the cost!
I didn't save cord blood at all, and don't know anyone who did.
My OB said that the chances of needing it are so miniscule that it's not worth doing. Most cord blood gets used for a sibling, or is donated to a stranger.
I am with your husband on this one. That is a chunk of change that I would invest elsewhere.

I calculated that private donation cost between $5 and $50 Million dollars per use (depending on whose stats you use for the number of times it is actually used) verses the cost of public donation per use is around $50,000. A much better deal. It is free in most cases, ask your doctor. You have to do it before 32 weeks.
My doctor told me that it wasn't worth the money and we would be better off donating it. I did a little research but most testimonials about using it or doctors who encourage it are being paid by the companies that will profit.
I'm also pretty sure that the National Blood Bank recommends donating it.
