Baby Names

Please vote on my list

Hi, I'm new to the names board. Please vote on my list and/or let me know what you think!

We're not finding out what we're having and I'm having a ton of trouble with names.  My husband is Irish (as in all family still live there) and I love the idea of an Irish name but don't actually like most of them.  Plus we are both teachers which I think makes this whole name thing tough.  The middle name for a girl is set in stone after his mother who passed away recently (Patricia).  I love Aidan but have heard that it's really popular right now, although on the Social Security website which lists name popularity by years it was only like #50 in 2008 so I'm not really sure... Other suggestions are welcome as well.  Thanks!!

  • I am also a teacher and have yet to come across an actual Aidan...I guess they are all younger than 8 & 9 yrs. old! I think the reason the SS list is skewed is b/c of all of the different spellings of Aidan out there. If you tally them all up it's more popular than 50. But when we picked my daughter's name Brianna was super popular and people told me I should avoid it- we named her Bryanna and she has yet to encounter a classmate w/ her name. I have never seen one w/ her spelling and only 2 w/ the traditional spelling. Go for it if you like it!
  • I like the other name you have on your list (Brendan) far better than Aidan. You will run into a lot of Aidans. And Jaydens and Braydens and Kadens and anything that sounds like Aidan.

This. If you put all of the spellings together, Aiden/Aden/Aidan/Ayden/Adan, etc. is the most popular name, not to mention the Bradens, Cadens, Jadens, Zadens and Haydens.

I like Brendan. Other similar ones to consider are Declan and Eamon.

Sorry, I don't like any of your girl choices, but there are many pretty Irish ones to consider. I would go to behindthename.com and look on the Irish list and see what you like.

I like the middle name of Patricia/Patrick.

  • If you're absolutely in love with Aidan then go for it. I, personally, still regret naming my son Kaden. We've run into quite a few, enough to annoy me, Kadens, Bradens, Jadens, Aidens and their spelling variations.

And while I like both the names Keira and Hannah, I'm not crazy about the 'a' sound ending in both the first name and the middle name. But it's not like middle names are used that often anyway so I guess it really doesn't matter.

  • I voted on your list and I actually like all of your girl names but my fav is Keira. My friend's DD (born 11/07) is Keira and she's a sweetheart. I think it's a pretty name. Brendan is my pick for a boy's name just b/c Aidan is so popular.
  • That's interesting that you found that Aiden was only #50, because everything I've found says that it's #1 in like...almost every state in the nation!  I love Aiden too; but because of popularity, I'd never use it.

My family is totally Irish too (still live there as well), and my husband's family is Irish (but more removed from the "homeland" than my mom's side).  Our last name is Conner; so, we've decided that we're going to go with traditional Irish names for all of our children.  You can check out my name list if you want some ideas (look in my siggy).

Otherwise, I'd say to go to a baby name site (I like babynameworld.com and nameberry.com) and put in names with an Irish/Celtic origin.  I think you'd actually find a TON that are easy to spell and very likeable.  I think a lot of the girl names would probably sound pretty good with Patricia as a mn too!  HTH and GL!

  • I love Hannah and Faith a lot. Brendan is really nice.
  • i would suggest that you not only look at the current popularity of names, but look back through years past and study trends in naming. the aiden/ jaden/ caden names are declining in popularity now [although still extremely popular] and in a few years will sound extremely dated like tiffany.

if you're ok with that, then go for it, but there's definitely a LOT more to it than just seeing how popular a name is on the list now. also, it's not too difficult to see what will be the trends in names in coming years so try to stay away from those if you don't want a super popular name.

for now, i'd say stay away from surnames/ occupational names like hunter and parker, floral names (lily, rose, etc.), presidential names, "classic" names like isabella, olivia, henry, and grace. there are others but those are very popular right now. also, when you find a name you both love, don't worry about what other people think of it!

    welcome and good luck!
