Jillian or Gillian?

I'm leaning much more towards Jillian but I'm just curious to see what others think. It seems like G is the original spelling (from the middle ages) but J is much more common now. And I'd worry that w/ a G people would mispronounce it w/ a hard G sound.. My only thing with J is that I worry some people will read Julian, but that doesn't seem like a big deal overall.

Re: Jillian or Gillian?

  • I would both never read Jillian to be Julian nor Gillian to be Jillian so from my perspective, your best bet is Jillian :)
  • I voted for Gillian b/c if she's ever a "Gill" it seperates her out from the "just Jill's".  BTW, it goes really well with your 1st daughter's name!

I'm over-analyzing again ;) I was on some site that has people list what they love or hate about their name, etc.. and a lot of them commented that people called them Julian instead of Jillian.. So that made me think, hmmm... That and my dad's name is Edouard (French) and people are constantly calling him Edwardo! Umm... no, not the same! So I guess people just read what they're used to..

And Gillian like the actress, it keeps popping up and one of my friends suggested spelling it that way, so I did some research and saw that was actually the original spelling.

I LOVED that site!!! Remind me what the heck it's called agian, please!! I found that when naming Alaina and folks said people always ask how to spell it.......I thought NAH they won't........but they do!!! And they think Elena alot just like the site said LOL.

I would love to meet those people that are either hearing a woman on the phone or meeting a woman in person who is saying her name is Jillian and they go "Julian?" lol

I do like PPs point about being able to distinguish her name if it came to that :)

  • Stick with Jillian.  I think to many people would pronounce Gillian with a hard G.  There is a bluegrass singer named Gillian Welch and she goes by the hard g pronunciation as well.

FYI:  If you wanted to call her Jill and I saw it spelled Gill I would probably laugh.

  • I so wish I remembered the site! It never comes up in regular searches when I want to find it, it seems.. and every time I kick myself for not bookmarking it! I should go try to find it now..

  • aha! I found it :D This is the one I was talking about, it shows all the normal name stuff, plus a tab "considering this name" with reviews or whatever about the name from people who have that name. And also popularity tab and similar names. I love this site!

  • Thanks, Bim!!!
  • I would definitely go with Jillian. Even though the original was with a G, the reason why overtime people started spelling it Jillian is because of the pronunciation issues. Plus Jill and Jilly are just so cute!!

The whole Jillian and Julian thing just shows how people will mess up ANY name. I really wouldn't let that deter you from using it.?Jillian is at the top of my list too. I really love it!

With a J just in case she decides she likes to go by Jill, not Gill.

  • Jillian, by a long shot.
  • Definitely Jillian!
  • My oldest friend's DD is Gillyan!  Stick out tongue
  • I've known a few Gillians and each one of them was frequently called Gill ian (like Gilligan).

I I think Jillian looks pretter.  Either way Gill is awful!

I think Jillian looks prettier. ?I really don't think anyone will call her Julian.
  • I'm a fan of the U.K. version Gillian but think that it is mostly spelled Jillian in the U.S. But in the U.K. it can be pronounced with either a soft or hard 'g'. If you are worried about it I'd go with Jillian. I can't imagine anyone mistaking it for Julian and if someone does it's because they can't read very well and that's their problem!

  • My vote is for Jillian!

For the record, when asked what DD's name is, a lot of people have asked Julian?  But we love the name, and just correct them.  Some people claim to never have heard of that name...ummm ok  ;)

  • DH was pushing hard for Gillian - I went into pre-term labor at about 34 weeks and we weren't set on names yet.  If we had had the girls then, I think we would have had an Abigail and Gillian!  He wanted to call her Gillie.

That being said, I think Gillian is really cool, but only if you plan to call her by her long name.  Gill looks weird and would be mispronounced all the time.
