Minnesota Babies

Visiting your Area

Hi! I'm visiting St. Paul for a wedding in Aug with my DH (we're having a weekend away from baby).  We'll be there 3 days and considering we're from San Diego and have never been there what are some things to do/enjoy? Thanks!

Re: Visiting your Area

  • Hello, There is always stuff going on given what weekend you are here? you might be able to hit up our State fair also we always have the great Mall of America.

  • Hey....you could go see the capitol building, the cathedral, Rice Park, there is a science museum...everything is very close to each other. Taxi or walking distance
  • Lake Calhoun is a must stop, and it's very close to the Walker Arts Museum and the outdoor sculpture garden (free!).

Ditto!  Also the little resturant Tin Fish at Lake Calhoun (it looks like a concession stand) is awsome.  If it is a nice day you can walk, people watch, and get a great lunch/dinner

  • The Minnehaha Falls and the restaurant there called Seasalt if you enjoy fish at all. It's very fun! We love walking and riding bikes around the lakes in Mpls (Lake Harriet is our favorite ~3 mile walk around each Harriet, Calhoun and Lake of the Isles).

  • Oooooh.... um... these are just a few of my favorites:

St. Paul : Historic Fort Snelling, Science Museum of Minnesota, Como Park zoo and conservatory (which is free and a local treasure, although probably laughable in comparison to the San Diego zoo), Minnesota State Fair (at the end of August).  A walk or drive along Summit Ave = amazing Victorian-era houses that have been beautifully maintained.

Minneapolis : Sculpture garden, Walker art musuem, Guthrie theater, Mill Ruins park and Mill City museum, Mall of America, Minneapolis Institue of Art, any of the Mpls lakes (Calhoun, Harriet, Lake of the Isles, etc.).  The University of Minnesota campus is huge, wonderfully landscaped and diligently maintained, featuring the (free) Weizman art museum and the (practically free) Bell museum of natural history.

There are a ton of great places to eat in St. Paul. They are also pretty unique so eating there is only part of the experience. I think Mickey's Diner is something to see and the pancakes are awesome. I also LOVE Izzy's Ice Cream and I can almost guarantee that you will see a few ice cream flavors you have never heard of.

  • I would definitely recommend spending some time in St. Paul.  There are great shops all along Grand Avenue and great places to eat.  Summit Avenue is 1 block north and is beautiful this time of the year with all the gorgeous homes and trees...West River Parkway is right down the road which has endless trails to follow along the river.
