My DH's father's took a year (he had a will) and when we got the inheritance there was interest attached. He had a will. My mom did not have a will but my brother had control of everything. He just waited 6 months for all medical bills to come in and then divided up what was left (not much). My father had already passed when I was in my 20's. I think it might make a difference as far as time if there are children or a spouse still living.
My Dad's was fairly simple and it still took a year. Partly we were waiting for his tax refunds and I think things can kinda just move slow!
We also had 3 houses to sell so it possibly could have gone a touch sooner but we practically gave them away and they went pretty fast for this sh!tty market.
Re: How long to settle an estate?
I would say anywhere from 6 months to 2 years would be "normal" but that for most uncomplicated ones, 6-12 months.
