TTC after 35

PSA: Rubella immunization and TTC

Hi, Everyone.

Short version: Make sure you still have rubella immunity. Those shots we got as kids don't last forever.

Longer version: I got my first results from the pee/blood tests at my first RE visit, and all were normal except I have no rubella immunity.

The doc says contracting rubella while pregnant is bad news.

I had rubella shots as a kid, but duh on me, it never occured to me that the immunity does not last forever. Nor did my obgyn nor regular doc ever suggest I be tested for immunity.

What this means: If I'm not KUd right now (I'm 6 dpo), I will be adding a rubella vaccination to the long list of stuff that will be done to me next cycle.  I then have to PREVENT pregnancy for one month. This is good, because with the old vaccine, you couldn't get KU'd for THREE months.

If I am KUd, I can't get the vaccine, and I guess I just have to be careful.

  • Interesting!  I'll have to look into that.

  • When I was doing my 1st IVF I had to get a rubella shot because the Dr. said my result came back negative for it.  Good luck.
  • I had to get another one at the end of college for some reason...interesting though.

I hope everything works out ok.  If you can't get it most other people have had it so try not to worry too much.  Luckily my dr tested and I'm still have it.  Mine also tested for chicken pox.

  • I had my RE tell me the same thing. Had no idea.

  • My gyn tested me for this along with several other tests to see if I am a carrier for some genetic diseases (such as CF). I thought he said the rubella was negative, but it sounds like that is bad and I should have tested positive.  Maybe I misunderstood, but I will have to check on this when I talk to him again. Thanks for the info. I had actually been confused as to why he was doing a rubella test in the first place. Now I get it.

  • Yes...at my preconception visit with my OB she made sure to order a blood titer to check for MMR vaccine.  Luckily, I was still immune and didn't need the booster.  It's a good idea if you're TTC to see your doc before you're KU and go over stuff like this.
  • My RE checked me for immunity last year, and I didn't need a booster.  I kind of laughed because I have never heard of anyone having rubella.  I thought it was sort of wiped out like malaria.  I guess it would resurface without the shots?  Who knows...I'm covered.
