Feeding Question

I just had my first baby and I feel so lost when it comes to knowing how much to feed him and how often.  I am feeding him formula and sometimes breast milk ( I pump 1oz).  I feed him 1 oz of formula every 2 hours day and night.  Should I be feeding him every 2 hours at night or let him sleep and let him cry when he's hungry?  Is 1 oz enough?  He is 1 week old.

Re: Feeding Question

  • 1 oz wasn't enough for my DS, but he was a big boy too.  Personally, I would put more in the bottle (like 2 oz) and see what happens.  1 oz just doesn't seem like enough to me.  If you increase it and he starts spitting up a lot, then that could mean that you are feeding him too much.  Just try it and see what happens.

And I personally believe that you shouldn't wake a sleeping baby.  The pedi told us to wake him up at 4 hours if he was still asleep (at night) for the first several weeks.  We would let him go a little longer than that sometimes if he was really sound asleep.

  • This is my first also so im no expert but my LO is also a week old and he takes about 2 1/2 oz every 3 hours. (sometimes a little more)

I wake him to feed him every 3 hours because my pedi wanted me to. (He lost to much of his birth weight too soon)

My pedi also told me just to feed him untill he quits sucking. That if he stops sucking, wiggle it a little and if he keeps going to let him if then hes done.

  • I would also try at least 2 oz per feeding. Many pedis suggest waking a baby up to eat until they are back up to their birthweight. After that, you can just let your LO sleep.
