NBR: Resume/Application Question

Any suggestions on how to make my resume/teaching applications stand out? I have applied to I am pretty sure every school district in the DFW Metro and beyond lol. But the problem is, I have been out of school for over a year, have pretty much zero work experience, and I don't really think there is much that makes me stand out on paper. So, how do I make it look like I am the best applicant for the job?

I know it is still a little early to be counting my hatched chicks, but we need me to get a job this coming year and I am getting antsy! Thanks ladies

Re: NBR: Resume/Application Question

  • Do you have any experience participating in any extracurricular activities (sports, student council, etc)? Would you be willing to coach?

Have you done any continuing education or professional development classes you have taken?

    Do you speak another language?

I don't know if any of this helps, but I know those are some things that may make you stand out some.

  • Lets see, I haven't played sports since middle school really. I was on track and in swim my freshman year of HS. Thats about it. I was really active in clubs/organizations in and out of school. Student government, SADD, yearbook, newspaper ect. I have all these marked on my application, should I add them to my resume?

I haven't taken any continuing ed classes or prof dev. I don't really speak any other languages either. I took 10 hrs of Spanish in college, just enough to refresh me on how to count to 100, gato, bano, and all the other basics.

    Thanks Avz2Azb

  • First, make sure your resume looks professional.  You want a job working with kids but you don't need to have your resume on paper with a crayon border or little school houses (I've seen this SO much at job fairs.)

Also, check the websites for school districts you are interested in.  If there is an opening posted, call the principal at that school or email your resume and cover letter directly to them.

Your post didn't say what grades or subjects you are interested in teaching.  K-4 jobs are often hard to come by since approximately 75% of new college of education graduates have a K-4 certificate.

  • People really put crayon borders on their resume? Lol

I have emailed my resume and a cover letter to principals that have openings.

I am certified for grades 4-12 social studies. I am hoping that such a large range of grades will be helpful.

I just hate the waiting game!

  • Good luck! I wouldn't put the club stuff on your resume, but maybe in a cover letter.

The state has changed it now. It's EC-6 and I don't know the other ones. I'm taking cont. ed classes to catch up on the state's qualifications. Then again i have a degree in EC, psychology and working on another now. Bleh, too much school
